Crude pushed to an 18-month high Thursday. It passed $85 a barrel at one point, driven by optimism that the world will need more oil as it pulls out of the Great Recession.

Benchmark crude for May delivery rose $1.75 to settle at $86.62 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. On Thursday, the contract climbed $1.11 to settle at $84.87. Global oil trading was closed for the Good Friday holiday.

During the 'Great Depression' my grandfather was working at Armco (American Rolling Mills then) and I remember him telling me how men would walk for miles and miles to see if they could get one single day's work. Most were turned away because there was nothing there for them that day. Those who did would often open up their dinner bucket at lunch and maybe have a single potato for their dinner...they'd work 10 hours and walk for miles to get back home again

Benchmark crude for May delivery climbed after the report, adding $1.79 to settle at $85.84 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. In London, Brent crude gained $1.43 to settle at $86.15 on the ICE futures exchange.

The surge in oil prices continued Wednesday, even after a government report showed supplies of crude unexpectedly grew last week.
