Stopping for School Buses- Know the rules!

Post by my2cents »

I have come close to being involved in a accident twice in the past month due to drivers stopping for school buses on a four lane road when they are not required to do so. The bus is coming north on US 23 and stopping at the first house on the right leaving the Portsmouth City Limits. People going South will see the flashing lights and come to a sudden unexpected stop. You don't have to stop in you are on a four lane road and the bus is going the other direction. There is a slight rise and curve in the road and someone always comes up over it and almost hits the stopped traffic. One morning it was a truck driver who stopped. He should know better. Learn the rules. I even saw one woman stop on US 23 where the highway is divided! Here is the rule from the BMV website.

School Buses: Upon meeting or overtaking any bus stopped for the purpose of receiving or discharging school children or people with disabilities, all drivers must stop at least 10 feet from the front or rear of the bus and may not proceed until such bus resumes motion or the driver is signaled to proceed by the school bus driver.

If driving on a 4-lane roadway, the driver need not stop if on the other roadway.

And while I am venting, it is also against the law to drive in the left hand lane on a four lane highway, unless you are overtaking another vehicle. I see this all the time, just cruising along like they don' t have a care in the world. The worst ones usually go about 54 MPH and set up running road blocks. 99% of the time, they have KY tags!

reminds me of a joke. You know who the most popular guy is at a nudist colony. The guy who can carry to cups of coffee and a dozen doughnuts! The most popular girl, of course. The girl who can eat the last doughnut. :122246

I'll take the Ky part a bit further - most of the time, they have Greenup County tags!

This infuriates me too!

The Ohio State Highway Patrol does this all the time!

They drive under the speed limit in the passing lane.

I see this happening nearly every morning on my way to work on U.S. 52.

For me, any clear lane is the passing lane.

On Old 52 westa Chesapeake, the speed limit is 45 MPH. There's almost always some fuddy-duddy only going 35 MPH, creating a rolling roadblock in areas where there isn't enough clear view ahead to pass.

I was told that the KY people always stay in the lane they started in, because if they switched lanes they would have to call and get directions again.

Now Instructor, you know they have to troll to get their daily quota. Now that the construction signs are down, they have to actually do something to keep their numbers up.

Much like Hanging Rock trolls. Now much difference between the two.

With Hanging Rock, it's more than a quota, it's an industry. Ever wonder why a little piss ant town like HR has a brand new building and three new cruisers. And unless things have changed, those HR cops couldn't chase down anything but a doughnut. They pay all their bills off the fact that US 52 runs thru their godforsaken town. Coal Grove and South Point are starting to catch on. All it would take to stop them is for someone to put a billboard up at each end of town saying "speed trap ahead. slow down to 55". In a year they would be over budget and have to lay off cops. Of course this would have ripple effects thru the Crispie Cream doughnut shops, but so be it.

They were forced many years ago to put up signs that read "Speed Limit Strictly Enforced".

Of course, the signs didn't have reflective material on them so you couldn't see them at night.

The signs were quite small too.

This was done a few years back when they made national headlines for being the worst speed trap in the country.

I have noticed that the signs are mysteriously gone now.
