Ashland (Kentucky) Coke Plant To Close

Post by kantuckyII »

Hate to see these guys lose their jobs. Hopefully, many will get to transfer or at least, those who desire to do so. The thing though is today, so many people's spouse has a job too that they don't want to walk away from. Environmental updates is the reason they say they're closing the plant.

Also, in the news along that line...
HONOLULU, Hawaii -- After failing to get climate-change legislation through Congress, the Obama administration plans on pushing through its environmental policies through other means, and Republicans are ready to put up a fight.

On Jan. 2, new carbon emissions limits will be put forward as the Environmental Protection Agency prepares regulations that would force companies to get permits to release greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act.

Critics say the new rules are a backdoor effort to enact the president's agenda on global warming without the support of Congress, and would hurt the economy and put jobs in jeopardy by forcing companies to pay for expensive new equipment.

"They are job killers. Regulations, period -- any kind of regulation is a weight on economy. It requires people to comply with the law, which takes work hours and time, which reduces the profitability of firms. Therefore, they grow more slowly and you create less jobs," said environmental scientist Ken Green of the conservative American Enterprise Institute.
Doubtless, we'll be paying higher utility bills in the near future

You really honestly believe he'll be re-elected then?

National politics has nothing to do with the timing of the plant closure. Some people on here believe that if Bush or Mccain was president that this wouldn't have happened :-( Shame. How many of these old foundry types get shut down[Solvey, Mallable/ironton iron,Dayton Walther,et al.] before people realize that money had to be put back into these places to keep them up instead of running them as long as you can til they fall apart, and not just because they dont meet enviroment regs. The old plants are just going to become part of our past, no matter who is in power at the time. I'm sure a lot of you are like me with so many family members and friends past and present that all these plants closing has affected.. sad

Unfortunately, one of the crass members here, with Neanderthal conservative drivel ,never misses a chance to lace the content with his twisted politics. Most of us enjoy the country's protection for all with clean water, clean air, safe food and drugs and health standards and safer job workplace safety that are the envy of the world. This has nothing to do with regulations. Its another manifestation of GREED by corporate interests -- the same interests that ship jobs off to China or India for pennies on the hour labor, that engage in ruthless crony capitalism and lobby for special interest protection, tax avoidance and stack now trillions of $$$$$$$$ profits offshore because they aren't permited to run old style "planation" gulags in the states anymore. They are now busy exploiting the poor uneducated masses in the rest of the world.

There is still yet more education of the American people to come who still don't know better than to put the fox in the hen house. Rest assured the lessons will be firmly stamped on American economic life for decades to come.

An intelligent factual post in a sea of propaganda. Thank You!

Geesh, don't encourage him guy! He is like something from a science fiction film that only grows worse with attention. He's like the giant head that is slowly swallowing up Ironton day by day. I am SOOOOOOOOOO Glad I don't see him anymore and won't be. It's been so awesome!
