Would You Prefer A National Sales Tax Over The Current...
How about it? would you prefer that over what we have now? I know I would.
Re: Would You Prefer A National Sales Tax Over The Current..
so, a tax increase. local and state are still going to need and want their share.
Re: Would You Prefer A National Sales Tax Over The Current..
This is an idea only an idiot would think of. Neither party will support it. A weak economy will not support the idea in actual implimentation. Its would ruin what economy we do have.
The poor would get killed and the Middle class squeezed, adding more pressure on the economy and killing off sales & services in the economy. Lay-offs from falling sales would produce another devastating recession with a depression a strong probability. The only place a tax increase would not hurt is on the wealthy and very profitable companies. Both Main St. & Wall St would be opposed to this tax now. Its thus an idea dead on arrival.

Hold on there Robin Hood, how would the poor get killed and the middle class squeezed? If they don't spend much, they won't be taxed much.
Re: Would You Prefer A National Sales Tax Over The Current..
How about a no other taxes, a 20% sales tax, 10% goes to federal, 6% to state, and 4% to local.

You could still give them earned income tax credits where they'd get back more than they paid like today

I think it would create a huge black market where people would buy to avoid the tax. Then we would have IRS agents chasing and jailing folks like moonshiners.

Why not keep tax the same as they are now and implement a national sales tax on all goods of say 2%. that tax would go directly to pay debt. Raise the full retirement age for all people under 50 to age 70. Raise the early retirement age to age 65.
Re: Would You Prefer A National Sales Tax Over The Current..
apparently you're too young to be very familiar with the federal government. hell, within a week of receipt they would be spending that money trying to figure out why dogs quiver when they crap in Montana. (if some senators brother-in-law was a vet in Montana).Dinocrocetti wrote:Why not keep tax the same as they are now and implement a national sales tax on all goods of say 2%. that tax would go directly to pay debt. the current S.S. coffers are filled with IOUs now....
besides, we pay MORE than enough taxes now to fund the NEEDS of the government. they just need to curtail their wild and foolish spending.
Re: Would You Prefer A National Sales Tax Over The Current..
Tobias gets a gold star because he has correctly identified part of the problem -- the poor.
The other part also won't work NOW with the Middle class. If there was to be a National Sales Tax, it would have to be as it was when Clinton balanced the books and turned it over to W without a recession. Then a switch for the Middle class could happen without financial consequences for the country or the Middle class. To do it in the middle of a recession would blow up the economy and cause a Depression. Many would simply hoard things rather than pay and others would simply go with-out.Both would kill sales and drive down business, forcing more lay-offs and a downward spiral of no escape for business.
Makes little difference -- neither party will do it because they would be rightly blamed for the disaster. Again -- only an idea an idiot would think of.
