We were living in Alabama at the time and they kept telling on the news that there was a bridge collapse in Ga-lop-o-lus ,and until they said the Silver bridge, it didn't register with me where it was. My two aunts were shopping down town Gallipolis and later told me that they could hear the screams from there. A boy stationed there at Fort Rucker, Alabama, lost his sister and niece on the bridge. May they all rest in peace.
"Ga-lop-o-lus"... thats funny
I have family who live in Meigs County & use the "Indianapolis" version of "Gallipolis". but the traditional way of saying it is tongue work with the "lis"...I think that confuses people.
That is like "Tuscarawas County"... it took me a long time to get that down. And I wanted to say everything the correct way while working in the media. lol.
but Gallipolis and Point Pleasant are two great towns. I dated a girl from Point Pleasant and spent quite a bit of time down there. I never felt like a stranger. Good people. I hope people continue to heal from this tragedy.
And tragedies have such a deep impact on entire communities. 9/11/01 an obvious one. My mom was down in Oklahoma after the bombing there in the mid 90s. And the loss of life was so painfull and the damage cut people so deep. The way people in that city were impacted. That is something that will never go away. But time heals.

The new auditorium in Point Pleasant High School will be named the Paul and Lillian Wedge Auditorium - named after those two who perished in the disaster. Their son bought the naming rights for the auditorium last year and named it after his parents.
On another note, I looked at the Gallipolis paper online today and they had none of the Silver Bridge articles that were in our paper again today on Monday, were there any on Saturday? I wonder why our paper would have several articles on it but the Gallipolis paper had nothing.
