Penis amputee says he wanted to flee after news

Post by farmer »

SHELBYVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A Kentucky man suing a doctor for amputating his penis testified that the moment he learned part of the organ had been removed, he wanted to flee the hospital.

Former truck driver Phillip Seaton testified Monday during his civil trial against Dr. John Patterson. He says when the doctor told him the news after the 2007 surgery, he went into the restroom, pulled down the surgical dressing and couldn’t see his penis.

Seaton, of Waddy, and his wife, Deborah, are seeking unspecified damages for “loss of service, love and affection” following what they say was supposed to have been a circumcision.

Patterson’s attorney said during opening arguments in Shelby County Circuit Court that the doctor discovered deadly penile cancer during the surgery, and that Seaton had initialed a document authorizing treatment in unforeseen circumstances.

Would that be a long walk off a short pier? ;-)

What would have been his response if the Dr. had told him post-op that there were malignant cells found/identified, but NOT REMOVED?? I'll tell you - he'd have SUED for that FAILURE!! My guess is the Dr. didn't take enough time to fully explain the contemplated surgery and the potential emergency of finding something unanticipated which demands some immediate action to correct [which provision is included in the language of ALL surgical permission forms patients are required to read and sign].
Do not women undergo surgery to remove their breasts, or uteruses, or ovaries every single day - and that loss is considered "routine", "minimal" and "unworthy of complaint" and joked about? But if the surgery involves a man's sexual organs [penis or testicles] - WOW - that's horrendous and worthy of a lawsuit against the medical professionals who found, diagnosed, and removed a malignant life-threatening invasion of a part of a man's body that somehow is much more important than any other body part especially female ones? Listen to the Dr or ask a nurse - PAY ATTENTION to - AND READ - the permission you're signing - you are allowed to ask questions and request repeated explanations. .
If you sign that permission then you're saying you have been told and "understand" including contingencies!
But no Dr. can promise to predict perfectly the course or outcome of ANY surgery, and you HAVE to grant them permission to use their skill and judgement to deal with any unforseen eventuality.

The doctor should have done the job he was suppose to do originally ...AND THEN discuss the situation with the patient and his wife a day or two later. It would have at least given the guy a chance to get a second opinion and he would have at least known it was going to happen. I can't blame the patient for what he is doing.

Did it say in the article what the planned [apparently "elective" as opposed to "emergency"] "originally scheduled" surgery was? I didn't see that stated.
And when something unanticipated happens or is found while the patient is "open" on the table under anesthesia for even the most supposedly "routine" surgery - "waiting a couple of days" to discuss/deal with/get a second opinion is NOT an option. That Dr has to make the call there and then to handle that sudden emergency to the patient's best survival outcome advantage.
I never worked as a "surgical - operating room" RN, but I saw, more than once, someone presenting with classic appendicitis symptoms taken to surgery for an "emergency appendectomy" whose belly pain proved to be caused by something else entirely. And the surgeon involved most certainly didn't have the luxury of asking the patient's opinion or giving them a few days to consider removal of part of their colon, or liver, or whatever instead of the planned removal of their appendix they had agreed to. Making those judgement calls is part of medical training and skill and experience!

He shoulda been given a chance for a second opinion.....
