(Reuters) - The economy unexpectedly contracted in the fourth quarter, suffering its first decline since the recession ended more than three years ago as businesses scaled back on restocking and government spending plunged.

Government spending tumbled at a 6.6 percent rate as defense outlays plunged at a 22.2 percent pace, wiping out the previous quarter's gains. The decline in defense spending was the largest since the third quarter of 1972.

Government subtracted 1.33 percentage points from growth. The likelihood of fresh spending cuts suggests government outlays will remain a drag on the economy, but not as big of a weight as in the fourth quarter.

Why, you ask, isn't anything being done ?

Well heres the inside story -- W. spent 8 years taking balanced books and running up a huge debt by cutting taxes for the wealthy and running up our charge card for two wars, neither of which was paid for. Add in some other spending by the Rs while the country fell into a Great Recession ( some called it a Depression) which cut off further tax revenues to the govt. This "DEBT" disappears rather quickly and comes back to a managable amount very easily when revenues increase ( thats started), spending is cut back some ( think Defense and trim at other areas) and the economy recovers bringing back more revenues. Both parties know this. However, we have one party who uses propaganda to foist their agenda ( small govt, less taxes for the wealthy) and another party determined not to have people who can't afford it to pay for the mistakes by the other party that got us into this problem. And , since both know that nothing is as bad as the Rs try to make it out to be , this "crisis" will make for political war while not really meaning anything of substance. Even the "socalled" solutions by the Rs ( see Ryan's plan & budget), it would take 20-30 years to "recover".
