Ever Seen So Much Rain?
It's now rolling thunder over my head and getting ready to pour again. I have never seen so much rain in my life!

Never mind THAT flood - we had a pretty bad one here in '97 I think - rain way, way worse and far more prolonged than the last few days. I went uptown in Ironton this morning and from my view crossing the 2nd St Storm's Creek bridge, neither it or the Ohio River even looked vaguely "up", let alone approaching dangerous flood levels. What we've had here in Green Valley, Ironton have been lovely short rains - not bad storms, and not hard enough, or repeated often enough, or continued over long enough time to really produce potential flood conditions. The low spots along the curb in my street or in my yard have not even had standing puddles! Not even close to "bad" rains; let alone "the worst in memory". The rain we've had here in my end of Ironton has been of the "JUST RIGHT" variety - all of it just soaking into thirsty ground - perfect for grass and gardens.

Re: Ever Seen So Much Rain?
you are so lucky to have had the good soaking rains where my hubby works and here we have had what I call toad drowners or monsoons.. last night he had a storm @ his job that produced pea size hail and a monsoon rain....
the rains we had in 97 was a bad ones but our last bad flood here was 5 years ago April and we had 36 inches of water come into our lower level.. or as FEMA called it a storage area even though we had finished walls they replaced the walls 4 foot up only we physically did not live down there... he had woodworking machines and tools down there and the kids had all their playroom and toys and extra clothes down there and homeowners did not cover it because we are not in the flood way so we cannot get flood insurance....

Re: Ever Seen So Much Rain?
The flood of '97 was caused by what is refered to as "training" when a storm system just keeps moving right over one area and dumping torrential rain form storm afater storm. I think we had something like 9 or 10 inches of rain in about a 12 hour period back then.
There is another system that has the same characteristics moving into the area tonight and tomorrow and with the ground already saturated we could have some flooding again.

seofan_via_dublin, I missed that one but...someone told me that Turk's real name is Japeth!
Hmmmmmmmm I woke up this morning around 4 (darned calf spasm! man, those things hurt!) and it was raining hard enough I could hear it running down our gutters...woke back up around 8 and it was still doing that! that's strange for this time of the year. I know we broke records in May for rainfall. If this summer keeps up..we might break a year's record!

My poor dog spends more time hiding under the couch from storms lately than being out and about!
