The rate increase is part of a series of money-saving plans announced in March. These also include reducing mail deliveries to five days a week, closing offices and making other cuts in expenses. Congress must agree to eliminating deliveries on Saturdays.

Figure how many letters you will mail in the next 10 years and buy enough stamps to last.

This has been a standing joke each time they were to raise the rates but with the Forever Stamp, it is no joke this time around.

You think that a cost of a stamp will bother you..wait till you get your electric bill after the changes in the clean air act this administration is proposing now! Our nation is doomed if something doesn't give! What's difference is a one dollar stamp going to make?

A couple years ago I bought a book of stamps. I mailed one letter with it, then the next letter I sent came back because the price had went up. It had only been about a month. The rest of the stamps are still in the cabinet. I wont be mailing anything tru the post office.

I've used UPS, FEDEX and USPS for years, never had a problem with any of them. Just a quick search but it looks like the United States Postal Service has the best rates in many cases. All the packages arrived on time during the "test" that were conducted. Maybe you can find different results.

3 shippers, 3 time frames

Charges to send a 5-pound package from Yonkers, N.Y., to Folsom, Calif., as of late September.

Shipper Next-day air 2-day air Ground
Postal Service $36.85 $16.80 $10.58
FedEx 73.50 43.65 10.06
UPS 73.50 43.65 13.99
