The blaring Motown sound was equal parts black and white, gospel and secular, clean and gritty, a combination that helped the singles immediately cross over from the R & B to the pop charts. president Berry Gordy's Detroit labels added up to the most sucessful black-owned record company ever.

Berry Gordy kicked around several jobs before he entered the music business writing songs for Jackie Wilson. He co-wrote Wilson's first six hits in the three years before the singer left Detroit for New York in 1957.

Doggin Around came in 1960,its brassy,cabaret-meetsblues approach confirmed that Jackie Wilson and Berry Gordy was still on the same aesthetic wavelength.

Session pianist and background singer Barrett Strong's Money (That's What I Want) grew out of a bluesy piano lick he came up with during a studio jam and proved his only hit as a performer (though he wrote many more).
