In 1958,the manager of the Drifters (Bill Treadwell) who owned the group's name, jettisoned the existing Drifters and replaced them with a group formerly known as the Crowns, with Ben E. King singing lead.

With Shirley Aston usually singing lead, the Shirelles were the most successful girl group of the era, thanks to brilliant songwriter-producer Luther Dixon.

The Cookies, who cut "Chains", were the second incarnation of a 50s girl group that became Ray Charles backup singers, the Raeletts. Consisting of Ethal McCrae and a floating cast, the new Cookies sang behind L.A. pop-rock stars; Little Eva(The Loco Motion) reciprocated by singing high harmony on (Chains,) which the Beatles soon remade.

"Lucille, Little Richard's salute to a female impersonator in his hometown of Macon, Georgia, was the first single he cut outside New Orleans. but it retained the explosive sound of the songs he cut there.
