Did you know
The word "upset" as in the underdog upset the champion tonight, came into the English language in the 1920's when a race horse named upset beat a 20-0 horse named MAN-O-WAR in a race. Until then it meant sick, or angry.

The combination "ough" can be pronounced in nine different ways. The following sentence contains them all:
"A rough-coated, dough-faced, thoughtful ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough; after falling into a slough, he coughed and hiccoughed."

The word "Checkmate" in chess comes from the Persian phrase "Shah Mat," which means, "the king is dead".
