Crab's brother wrote:I will never forget my Sophomore year in the Sectional Finals at Waverly. We (Valley) were either the #8 or #9 seed (playing a lot of sophomores and juniors) and we are playing the #1 Southeastern. They were loaded and were somewhere in the 19-2/20-1 range. They had the 6'10" Netter, Wood, and Tyler Barbie. They were a great team. We battled and played them very tough. Midway through the 4th quarter we are up a bucket or two and the game is getting very physical. There is a no call on a play in the paint, and a fan from Southeastern stands up and chucks a wad of tobacco on the floor. He was ejected but it seems to sway momentum. The Panthers (mainly Barbie-I think he had 35+) hit a few shots down the stretch and they came back to beat us. A very crazy afternoon at the downtown gym.
The "wad" came after a Wood elbow nearly missed my chin after a rebound... I fell to the ground (I prefer not to say flop) and the tobacco was headed to the court. I remember thinking, "did that just happen?"

Though funny, some are all sad in one form of another.

Glad this thread was resurrected. One of the best, ever. Looking forward to more tales from the stands on here.

Watching a relative play at Katie Smith Gym years ago, I got tossed. Was sitting in front row at half court - the fans were on the officials hard late in a rowdy game. As one official ran by my, I had the mother of all sneezes, he tossed me. Said I yelled "you suck".

I have never been thrown out of a game but have had some nice interactive moments as a coach.

First one was when I got angry and kicked my chair putting a huge dent in it. Of course, got the "T" then I found out first hand about the "seatbelt" rule when I got to coach the rest of the game from my broken chair with whichever chosen butt cheek hanging off.

Second was a nice story where I was the 8th grade coach assisting my friend the 7th grade coach prior to our game. My buddy was clearly getting rooked by some home cooking and decided he had enough and starts getting the refs warmed up for my game with the comment "that's it make them work for their money" when one of our not so coordinated 7th graders hammered a kid on a layup. The ref tries to play it cool and smarts off with "we all have to work hard for our money. Maybe you should earn your's by coaching your team." Well, just so happened we both were volunteering our time which hit a sore spot with my friend not to mention the ref's attempt at being witty. He points out "we're doing this for free, how about you?" The play goes to the other end of the floor and the ref with it, but when he returns, instead of ignoring my friend and letting him calm down, he spouts off with "I'm not getting paid near enough to put up with you." Not to be outdone, my friend shouts to the scorers table "hey, anyone know if he's working for half price? Does he give a 50% discount?" then when the ref approaches "do you donate half your money back?......because you should considering you have missed half the calls in this game!"

Bingo. Whistle. T.

It was 98-99. So this would have been late February or early March 1999. If he was a big fan, he would know that team. They were great. Dan Easterday was their coach at that point.

One of the most ridiculous actions taken I've seen was while watching the end of a Waverly Hillsboro contest when a ref called a T on a kid, then a coach, then ejected a fan 10 rows up. i was standing by the door waiting to find a seat and heard the kid say nothing that deserved a T, then the coach said" what did he do?" he got his T, the fan screamed" that's Horrible" and got ejected! The ref, well, he went crazy lol The funniest thing was the law walked over and tried to escort a guy out on the second row who had nothing to do with it, and he got up like oh well I guess I'm getting kicked out then the right guy left on his own ...priceless.
Well I think we as refs should write to ol' Ted Strickland and see if he can pass a law that if you do get thrown out... you go to jail. I remember a game @ Ironton, and some goon came down the steps from the visiting team (South Point), screamed at an official and then "Bumped" him on the way up the sideline. The official hit the whistle, summonsed thr Law enforcement and the fan was arrested for assault! He was tried and convicted of that! Also he was barred from ALL sporting events while he was on his 5 yrs. probation! I commend the judge for his ruling!

One final note: Why piss one off when you can piss the whole crowd off? I was born for this stuff blockcharge!!!!!
I was at this game lol. I do think that if people get physical with a ref that they should go to jail, but NO WAY should they go to jail just for words. I personally think that some refs pay too much attention to what is being said in the stands instead of the game. I know some fans can get carried away, but if they are not cursing or threatening then the refs should just ignore them. Of course there is always someone that goes too far, but I have seen refs on an authority trip say stuff to and toss someone for stupid stuff. Their job is to ref the game not monitor the stands. The only way they should pay attention to the stands is if someone is throwing stuff or out of their seat coming at them or threatening them.

At a junior high girls game earlier this year at a Lawrence Co. school that starts with an "R" (hint, hint) the ref gave the coach a "T" AFTER the game was over because when the teams were shaking hands apparently the coach made a comment to the ref. Considering it was a 10+ margin of victory, it was pretty laughable for them to drag some kid out there by herself to shoot meaningless free throws. The crowd of course got a laugh out of the situation.

I have been thrown out of one game sort of? I don't know if it counts as getting thrown out after the game is over? My son was punched in the back when going through the line shaking hands in front of the officiating crew. I lite up the crew for not taking action and the school's AD form of justice was to have me escorted out after the game was over.

My favorite saying before every game to all three officials is calling like you see um.

... when I walk by officials I know as I'm heading for the cheap seats I pull out a $20 bill and ask them when do they want their money now or after the game - they always yell at me to "get that outta here!!!" - I respond "call a good game then"

During a JH game a few years back I had seen enough of a official that thought the game was more about him than it was for the kids. I calmly walked down to him during a timeout and told him I was going to go ahead and leave before I got throwed out but I was gonna let him know about his officiating. He listened to me disgrace him and after I got done I started to walk away and he gave me the your outta here!!! Lol..Never seen him officiate another game!!

I've never met a zebra I liked. All of them have rabbit ears, and they think they own the court, field, etc... Most of them play favorites too. Next time I see Pink Floyd at a game I am going to throw in a 20 to match his. That outta sway them our way. ;-)
