SHL Rankings, Scores, and Standings Week #9

Post by jchitwood »

We had quite a week of highlights, including North Adams regrouping and stringing together a couple wins, and Chris Cox slamming the ball on the floor at OSU. With the snow day canceling more than half the games, the division standings, nor the rankings, shifted much. That won't be the case this week, as the winner of Peebles/Manchester will surely catapult one team into the top spot. Still awaiting the score from Saturday's Lynchburg/West Union game.

1. The Ripley Blue Jays (10-1, 6-0) continue to coast, having won 8 straight games. This week they face West Union and Fayetteville. Next week they face their first series rival in weeks, Fleming County.

1. The Manchester Greyhounds (11-1, 7-0) I decided the Greyhounds deserved to be moved into a tie for the first spot. In the past few weeks their schedule they've beaten teams by a commanding lead, and their single loss was a squeaker. This week they face rival Peebles in a matchup that will (most likely) decide the winner of the division. The Greyhounds have won two straight against Peebles. They have a rematch against Whiteoak Friday.

3. The Peebles Indians 10-1, 5-1) have a long-awaited rematch against the Manchester Greyhounds this week. I can't overstate the importance of this game in the division. It will determine who wins the SHL Division 2...at least until these teams face Ripley. It's going to be a hot night in the wigwam, that's for sure. They play the Dragons and Paint Valley over the weekend.

4. The Fairfield Lions (4-8, 3-4) have a silver lining to their double-digit loss to Peebles: they were able to take the floor at Columbus and have their star player dunk on that rim. Like Norman Dale said, it is still ten feet high, regardless of the gym. Their only game is against Lynchburg-Clay on Friday, as they look to crawl back to .500. To finish with a winning record they'll need to take 3 out of their final 8 games. Potential stoppers: Manchester, Hillsboro, Eastern, and Manchester again. I like their odds.

5. The Wildcats of Whiteoak (4-8, 3-3) have a tough game ahead of them with Manchester this weekend. Last time these teams met Manchester walked away with a 14-point win. If Whiteoak plays their best game, who knows...they've played close games to very good teams this season. Before their Tuesday game, there is will be a benefit spaghetti supper at 4:30, to help the family that lost their home to a fire.

6. Eastern Brown (6-5, 1-5) continue to struggle in the SHL, but posted a one-point win against Georgetown. I don't think it's too early to call them the (edit--2nd-best team) in Brown County. They have a chance to improve their weak league record by facing Lynchburg-Clay, and rematching the Green Devils.

7. North Adams's (4-7, 3-4) interim coach Nathan Copas is doing a fine job steering the ship while Coach Young is on medical leave. The Devils snapped their skid of 30+ losses, only losing to Ripley by 17. After facing a strong Williamsburg team, but Devil fans get a matchup with Big School rival Eastern Brown.

8. The Lynchburg-Clay Mustangs (3-9, 2-3+) have just one contest this week, against the Lions of Fairfield. Their school recently inducted 5 members into its new Hall of Fame, a process I hope all SHL schools emulate.

9. The Fayetteville Rockets (2-9, 1-6) face Whiteoak and Ripley this week. It's likely they'll assure they're 4th-straight losing season.

10. The West Union Dragons (1-10, 0-6+) face Peebles and Ripley this week, and will also likely suffer their fourth straight losing season. The pendulum's ever swinigin'.

This week's BIG GAME: Manchester @ Peebles. There can be only one.

Manch did barely get by NA last Saturday........they were down 23-8 at one point. An in and out 3 bomb by NA near the end would have tied it with just seconds to go.

I'm thinking they also only beat Fayetteville by 10 or 12 and Peebles blew them out bigtime. Go figure, but in this league as we've said many times, any thing can happen on any given night and often does!

The top spots in the standings have moved for the first time in weeks...Peebles takes a half game lead over Manchester.

It will be interesting to see the Peebles/Whiteoak and Manchester/Fairfield games next week. We have to wait for February 12th and 18th to see these two squads face off against Ripley.
