Including the Final 4 appearances as Elite 8 appearances also, Portsmouth will be playing in its 14th Elite 8 game.......the Trojans have a very good 10-3 record in those previous games, winning in 1927, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1961, 1978, 1980, 1988, 1990, and 2011.........and losing in 1954, 1955, and 1991. Portsmouth lost to Hamilton in 1954(eventual state champion), to Cincinnati Hughes in 1955(eventual state runnerup), and then to Columbus Briggs in 1991(lost in state semis).

Ironton is playing in its 4th Elite 8 game, and have a 2-1 record..........the Fighting Tigers lost to Urichsville Claymont in 1979 54-44 after beating Marion Elgin in the regional semifinal........in 1994, Ironton beat Columbus St. Charles 76-54 in the final, and in 2005 beat Bloom-Carroll 65-59 in 2OT to stay undefeated going into the state tournament with a 25-0 mark.

Portsmouth is tied with Middletown for the second most state appearances with 14........ironically, Middletown is playing in the D1 regional championship vs. Fairfield today in Dayton.......the Middies haven't been to the state tournament since 1983.......if the Middies and Trojans both win, they remain tied for 2nd behind Canton McKinley's leading 28 appearances.......McKinley is gunning for its 29th state appearance today as it plays in the regional final in Columbus.
