Through 3 games, 6-1 sophomore Kyre Allison is averaging 21.7 PPG, while 6-3 freshman Kendall Reynolds is second on the team with a 13 PPG average. I can never recall a sophomore and freshman leading the Trojans is scoring.

Portsmouth lost 69-61 in OT to D2 Cleveland John Hay, which went to 4-1 with the win. Hay was ranked #16 in the Cleveland Plain Dealer poll, and their only loss was to #11 Cleveland East Tech. The PD ranks teams from Cleveland and Akron, which includes probably 100 schools. Hay had 4 players in double figures, led by 6-4 Kristen Wilson, who is a very good all-around player. The Trojans battled back from a 46-32 deficit to tie the game at 56 at the end of regulation. After watching John Hay, I definitely think they could beat any team in the SE District, and I have seen Valley, Warren, Eastern Brown, and Logan Elm, which are 4 of the district's highly touted teams........and I feel very good about the Trojans even after this loss.

The Wheelersburg game has been rescheduled for Jan.21, while the Jackson game is set for Jan.30.

Coach Collins will be going for his 70th win(currently 69-29) at head coach of the Trojans tonight at South Point. He is currently the 9th winningest coach in PHS history, and trails 8th place Bill Rohr by 11 wins (80-29) coming into the SP game. Jim Rhea is 7th at 81-52, while Bob Doll is 6th at 85-59. Joe Suboticki went 94-11 for 5th place, and his 89.5% winning pct. is the highest in Trojan history.

Coach Eugene Collins notched his 70th win as the Trojan head coach with a 55-40 win over Logan. Coach Collins is 70-30 overall, with back to back Final 4 appearances in 2011 and 2012, an SEOAL title in 2012, and also garnered SEOAL Coach of the Year in 2012. The Trojans also had 2nd place SEOAL finishes in 2011 and 2013. He has led the Trojans to 3 wins at Warren in the last 5 trips there.

Through 5 games, sophomore Kyre Allison is averaging 20.6 PPG, while freshman Kendall Reynolds is averaging 10 PPG. Junior Sky Oliver is contributing around 11 PPG, with a much needed 18 points vs. Logan. Allison tallied 22 vs. the Chieftains, adding a dunk. Portsmouth has beaten Logan 9 consecutive times.

Portsmouth's first 2 games in the KSA Classic in Orlando will be at 9:45 AM on Friday and Saturday, while the 3rd game will be Monday around 4:45 PM. The Trojans will open with Cinnaminson, NJ, and will meet Owen County, KY, or Griswold, CT in the 2nd game, depending on who wins or loses. Logan Elm in the opposite bracket, and would be the Monday game if both PHS and LEHS win their first 2 games.

This is the Trojans' second trip to the KSA, with the first trip in 2011 resulting in a 2-1 record for the Red and Blue, despite playing in the big school pool. PHS defeated Pace, FL 55-43, lost to Los Alamitos, CA 55-38, and defeated Spanish River, FL 53-47 in OT. They finished 3rd out of the 8 team pool.

I mistakenly reported the times of the Saturday and Monday games in my initial post........the Saturday game vs. Owen County, KY will be at 4:45 PM, while the Monday game will be at 9:45 AM. Owen County is 7-1 coming into the Portsmouth game.

Won't be able to post the result of the Owen County game until Monday, since I don't have a smartphone or my own computer, but by then everyone will find out the score one way or the other.

VERY PROUD OF OUR TROJANS ON THEIR KSA CHAMPIONSHIP!!

I think the notion that the Trojans will have trouble with teams with size can be put to rest.........they have beaten Warren, with 6-6, 6-5, 6-4, beaten Logan, with 6-8 Kevin Fisher, beaten Cinnaminson (NJ), with a couple of 6-5 kids, and today bested Liberty Christian, which had 7-4, 6-10, 6-7, 6-6, 6-5, and 6-4. I felt all along that our kids can compete on the glass and defend in the paint when they want to, and they have shown that ability on more than one occasion. We are very athletic, which certainly can help make up for a lack of size. I think size can be overrated at times in high school basketball, as I have seen teams win state championships with undersized players.

There's no question that the Trojans displayed a lot of heart winning the KSA......down to Owen County in the 4th quarter, and then having to overcome the height of Liberty Christian........our kids are starting to show the signs of being a VERY GOOD basketball team very capable of winning an SEOAL title and then making a very long tournament run.

STAY FOCUSED, TROJANS........PROUD OF YOU AND PROUD TO BE A TROJAN!!

Congrats to the Trojans. I got a chance to see a former Trojan Coach Lisath and is Northridge team in a recent Holiday Classic Championship game. Spoke to him after the game he told me the Trojans would be tough this year. Also said he missed his Piketon squad. I think the Northridge team will be good once he get his players back from injuries.

The Trojans will play Fairfield Christian in the Wellston Basketball Classic on Sat.Jan 25th.......starting time around 6:15 PM. Fairfield Christian made the Final 4 in D4 last season, and are currently ranked #11 in D4 this year. They are led by Stephen Carpenter, a 6-2 senior who I believe is averaging over 20 PPG.
