... Pfloyd's #1 the Miami Trace Panthers @ Pfloyd's #5 the Chillicothe Cavaliers ... a great way to kick off the Christmas vacation portion of the season ... going into this one the Panthers of Coach Ackley had won 27 straight regular season games starting with the final 3 games of the regular season in 2023-24 ... 21-0 in 2024-25 and entering this one at 3-0 in 2025-26 ... MT was averaging 68 ppg while giving up 55 ppg and had an average winning margin of 11.3 ppg ... Chillicothe entered the game at 4-0 ... scoring 50 ppg/giving up only 34 ppg with a 16 ppg winning margin ... AND if that's not enough to kick off the Christmas season this one was an FAC league game with the Panthers of Miami Trace the favorites, the Jackson Ironmen as the primary contender (by the by Jackson visits MT this coming Tuesday night) , with Chillicothe expected to push both teams - having the personnel , defensive game to take it all given half a chance ... a great barometer game for both teams tonight at the Hatton Gymnasium ...
... the Cavs of Coach Beard got the crowd in the game early as they took the opening quarter 14-7 ... the biggest hurdle was dealing with the big man inside for MT ... 6-8 sr. post player Adam Guthrie ... the game was going to be won depending on how the Cavs would be able to defend the big man in the paint ... Chilli HAS size in their starting lineup : 6-7 Noah Netter/6-5 Andrew Hammonds/6-4 Cayden Cox/6-4 Karter Williams and 6-3 Cooper Stoneking ... the problem isn't just height, it is bulk/strength/footwork/the ability to take the ball in the high post ...put the ball on the floor ...get to the blocks/rim and finish ... the Cavs were able to hold Guthrie scoreless in the opening quarter ... the big man had 4 touches in the paint ... was blocked 2 times at the rim ... BUT in the process of "not scoring" Guthrie was able to get the 6-7 Netter and 6-5 Ka'Von Plesant with early fouls ... Miami Trace attacked the paint offensively with Guthrie and who may be the best player on the floor night in night out soph PG Gage Bowers ... the 6-1 pg was able to get to the rim - twice finishing with pts (4pts) and the 3rd getting fouled at the rim 1/2 from the line ... MT only put up 2 three pointers in the opening period (0/2) ... the possession killer in the 1st was 5 Panther turnovers ... Chillicothe putting up 14 points, using all 3 levels - Cooper Stoneking led the scoring as he knocked down 2 triples (6pts) / got to the rim on a drive & finish 2pts ... 6-7 jr Noah Netter went above the rim on a slam for 2pts , 6-5 jr Andrew Hammond hit a midranger jumper 2pts and took one of the MT turnovers to the house for 2pts in transition ... Chillicothe 14 Miami Trace 7 after 1 ... Chillicothe has height & length to go with literally everyone that goes on the floor can get off the floor/dunking on the offensive end and disrupt shooters inside and outside on the defensive end ... while Miami Trace obviously has size in 6-8 Guthrie @ 285+ lbs ... 6-6 Ty Huffman, 6-3 Julian Baker - their "big" factor is in the form of physical strength , using their strength to move bodies on the defensive end of the floor both inside the paint and on the perimeter ... Bowers locked down the Cavs leading scorer in the opening quarter Cooper Stoneking - 0 pts in the second period ... Baker locked up on Cayden Cox (4pts in the 2nd/4 total thru the opening 2 qtrs) ... Guthrie forced CHS outside the paint as his presence in the paint turned away drives/changed shots in the paint/pulling down rebounds ... on the offensive end his big contribution wasn't his score total in the 2nd as he only tallied 1 fg (2pts), his big contribution was having Netter & Plesant both picking up their 2nd fouls and going to the bench ... with the Chilli "bigs" on the bench - Guthrie got his drive & finish, Bowers continued to attack the rim scoring on back to back drives 4pts, Baron Phipps added a putback bucket 2pts, Ty Huffman a midrange jumper for 2pts and Julian Baker drilled the MT lone triple of the game as the Panthers only took 5 treys in the game (1/5) ... opting to go to their strength with Guthrie IN the paint or in the high post with Guthrie driving the lane or as was the case most of the game - MT had such good spacing on the floor the entry pass to Guthrie was open literally every trip down the court ... Miami Trace with their defense holding CHS to 8 pts in the qtr (4 pts Cox/2 each Netter & Jett McAllister off the bench) and attacking the paint offensively took the lead into the locker room ... Miami Trace 23 Chillicothe 22 after 2 ... as a cheap seat guy & looking at answering the question "How do you stop Adam Guthrie?" , I THOUGHT, based on last years version of Adam Guthrie, you have to push Guthrie out on the floor - you have to MAKE him put the ball on the floor to get where he wanted to be - at the rim ... the 2025-26 model of 6-8 Adam Guthrie makes it easier for you as a defender in that HE takes the "moving him out on the floor" out of the defenders hands , Guthrie posts up in the high post to take the pass AND puts the ball on the floor, using his 6-8 lineman frame & 285+ lbs to get himself to the rim ... Coach Ackley IS one of the best coaches in the SE district , he knows a good thing when you got it : 6-8 in the paint, in the high post, we already took 3 three pointers - that's more than enough - let's use what we came here with - the Big Man in the middle ... the Cavs bigs are already in foul trouble - 2 each ... the possible results of "going to your 6-8 big man" - he scores at the rim, he doesn't score but gets fouled by bigs who already have fouls, he goes to the FT line, the Cavs double team Guthrie and oh yeh, Guthrie sees the floor really well - he passes out of the double team ... decisions are easy when you have THAT guy in the middle ... Miami Trace made 8 fgs in the 3rd, 7 were in the paint ... Guthrie with 9 pts in the qtr/13 thru 3 ... Ty Huffman at 6-6 was another "in the paint" option coming in from the wing - 6 pts in the 3rd ... Gage Bowers knocked down a 12 footer for 2pts ... Chillicothe could only muster another 8 pt quarter in the 3rd .. Cayden Cox struggled to get looks - 2pts ... Stoneking was held scoreless for the 2nd quarter in a row ... Karter Williams was held scoreless for the 3rd period in a row ... Noah Netter picked up foul number 3 but stayed in the game getting his 2nd dunk for 2pts to go with a putback bucket 2pts and 1/2 from the FT line ... Miami Trace 40 Chillicothe 30 after 3 ... Coach Beard was hired in August of 2021 ... Coach has been methodically developing a culture of winning, teaching players HOW TO WIN , getting the athletes at Chillicothe out on the basketball court, mentoring players not only to play the game but to play with discipline, with an attitude ... I watched the Cavs freshmen, the JVs and the varsity Friday night - Coach Beard IS getting to the kids in Chilli ... the 4th quarter is testament to the new Cavs culture ... I read some posts on SEOPs , one predicted a Miami Trace 25 pt W ... one questioning whether Chillicothe is as good as their record , Miami Trace IS the real deal - they have all areas covered : PG -check, big man in the middle - check, plays D- check, can play in the halfcourt - check, can score in transition -check, 7-8 deep ... Chillicothe showed me something in the 4th quarter - showed me what Coach Beard has been working to build in his program: Teaching kids how to be winners, to not fold when confronted with adversity , to believe in each other & TEAM ... the 4th quarter was all that ... Cavs outscored MT 17-14 in the quarter - they didn't fold ... CHS turned Trace over 8 times in the 4th ... the Cavs "players", their "goto guys" stepped up - showed they can be counted on - Stoneking having been shutout for 2 quarters knocked down a trey & scored in transition 5pts ... Cayden Cox put up 6 pts in the 4th ... Ka'Von Plesant was 0'fer for 3 qtrs - scored 4 pts ... Chillicothe got within 3 pts twice in the final quarter 41-44 ... 45-48 ... Miami Trace IS as good as their 27 straight regular season wins ... under the Cavs pressure - each time they were "seeing" the Cavs in the rearview window they answered - got the ball to THEIR "goto" guy - Adam Guthrie ... MT has the pieces to make teams pay ... the Panther regular season win streak is now at 28 with Jackson coming to visit Tuesday night ... Miami Trace 54 Chillicothe 47 a final ...

Minor adjustment Baron Phipps scored 8 not Dominic Williams
Re: Miami Trace 54 Chillicothe 47 a final ...
... thank you! my apologies to Baron Phipps & Panther Nation ... it's corrected ... Baron was a major part of the Miami Trace W as he helped push back on the Cavs surge in that 4th period of action - Phipps accounted for 6 of his 8 points down the stretch including 2/2 from the FT line ... one of 3 MT transition buckets in that 4th qtr to go with a score down low ... nice game by the Clinton Massie transfer ...TheOHIOBully wrote: Sat Dec 20, 2025 7:40 am Minor adjustment Baron Phipps scored 8 not Dominic Williams

Chilli is actually really good this year and super athletic, and will be even better next year….I wouldn’t be surprised if the FAC championship went through Chilli next year.E High wrote: Sun Dec 21, 2025 1:13 am It’s Amazing that an incredible, storied program like Chilly is now very average. It’s been pretty rough since the Covid season, but for at least the next year and a half, they’ll be very solid.E High wrote: Mon Dec 22, 2025 12:42 amGreat.
