I’ve seen it more the last year or two but especially this year.
When the game is decided and kids are at scorer’s table waiting to get their 45 seconds to 2 1/2 minutes of playing time and offense isn’t trying to score and defense kinda given up and officials that blow their whistle to get those kids in the game. Sometimes they just blow their whistle and point for the subs, sometimes they pretend then need to tie their shoe or have a player tuck in a jersey…regardless of the reason I appreciate the refs who see the bigger picture and do this. I saw a young JV ref do it the other night and he was a darn good player not long ago. He was probably never that player.
It might be frowned upon and I don’t know the protocol…but I appreciate it.
