... this one was on the back end of my hoops doubleheader travel plans on Saturday as I took in the Fairfield Union 61-43 win over Vinton County, then drove up Rte 50 to Zane Trace to catch this battle between Waverly @ Zane Trace ... great game by both teams ... both teams had played the night before so this was the second leg of a back to back -Waverly having to play a hard fought game vs a very good Gallia Academy team to get their W 57-54 while ZT had a much easier time with a Piketon squad at 65-32 ... as this one unfolded both teams had highlight reel moments ... for the winning Pioneers Grady Stewart after being held to 7 pts thru 3 qtrs pushed ZT across the finish line draining 3 big time 3's in the final 8 minutes of action ... Roman Berry showed he is a gamer - coming through big in the final qtr hitting a midrange jumper and scoring on drive to the rim ...as I talked to ZTPMM88 in the cheap seats at the half - I brought up that both teams had played games on Friday night with ZT cruising while the Tigers had to expend lots of energy to put away Gallia Academy by 3 pts ... told ZT it would be interesting to see if Waverly had anything in the tank for the 4th quarter ... as it turned out the Tigers appeared to run out of gas - making unforced turnovers down the stretch, missed at least 2 shots AT the rim in the final minute ... as a team only scoring 6 points in the final 8 minutes of action ... give Zane Trace much credit - the Pioneers pressured the WHS perimeter people full court the entire 2nd half of action - lots of energy expended just getting the ball up the court for the Tigers ... ZT took away scoring options in the 2nd half as Waverly was able to get offensive output from all 5 starters in the opening 2 periods while in the 3rd quarter - only 2 and the 4th only 2 as anyone not named Kage Alexander only scored a total of 4 pts in the final 16 minutes of play ... Teagan Hurt for Waverly drained 6 three pointers in the first half - 4 in the 2nd quarter - outstanding game, ZT took him away in the 2nd half - holding the talented 6-3 jr scoreless ... the ZT defense put a spotlight on the Tigers lack of offensive post play ... when you have size in the paint which WHS does in the 6-4/6-5 Myers twins THAT SHOULD BE where the ball should/can go when a team such as ZT takes away the perimeter scoring ... Myers "squared" had 7 pts combined in the opening 2 qtrs/0 pts in the final 16 minutes ... this may change for Waverly as 6-3 Landyn Russell gets cleared to return in mid-December ... Kage Alexander again was outstanding, 16 pts, the ZT D did an outstanding job of limiting his touches but when he got space he finished at the rim ... on the Pioneer side of the court - the duo of Stewart & McCullough is excellent as they combined for 30 of the ZT 53 pts ... Roman Berry is getting more confidence becoming a solid PG/3rd scoring option ... the difference maker for ZT is Brice Johnson, the 6-1 jr built like a tank started vs Waverly and was outstanding - only 4 points BUT he rebounds, finds open scorers AND SETS PICKS! you are not getting through a Brice Johnson pick, he doesn't move ... he gives his offensive player space and that step to get free or to the rim ... he will be an 8+ ppg scorer while adding a couple dimes and 5-6 rpg - great addition to the ZT lineup ... 2 good teams!!! both will continue to improve as all of the pieces start to fit together ...

Credit to both teams for a very hard-fought game. Waverly did appear to be running on fumes down the stretch. Coach Cassidy has done an outstanding job with the Pioneers after taking over for Gary Kellough. One thing you could always count on with teams coached by Kellough is solid defense. These Pioneer boys under Coach Cassidy appear to be no different. 2 of the 3 games so far, ZT has faced a double-digit deficit late in the game but has shown great discipline and no panic and has found ways to fight and claw themselves back into the game. Wasn't able to emerge with a win in the opener against Fairland, but did come away victorious against Waverly. Coach Cassidy deserves a lot of credit for keeping his players believing, even down 3-4 possessions late in games. Also want to give a tip of the cap to Grady Stewart for maintaining his composure in the 2nd half. Things were getting extra physical there for a stretch, especially with Stewart thinking he got fouled a couple different occasions but didn't get the call. I could see the frustration growing on him, but kudos to him for not letting it impact his play. He put the team on his back in the 4th qtr by nailing those three massive 3-pointers. Shout out to the fans on both sides. It was a great atmosphere for a non-league game. Not a huge turnout, but still decent and everyone that did show up was making themselves heard, especially toward the end. Both Waverly and Zane Trace should be fun to watch this season and wouldn't be surprised if both are playing in Athens at the Convo in March.

Def a stretch there where both teams were very frustrated with the calls/non calls.ZTPMM88 wrote: Mon Dec 08, 2025 8:05 am Credit to both teams for a very hard-fought game. Great tourney atmosphere for 2nd game of the going season.

I agree. I like when officials let them play. It keeps the game flowing smoothly. Having said that, you still have to call obvious fouls when committed. There were several instances on both sides in this game where fouls probably should have been called. Grady Stewart appeared to get absolutely hammered on a 3-pt attempt and got no whistle. As officials, if you allow the game to get TOO physical, you risk losing control of the game. They started calling it a little closer toward the end which is typical for most games.smurray wrote: Mon Dec 08, 2025 11:31 amDef a stretch there where both teams were very frustrated with the calls/non calls.ZTPMM88 wrote: Mon Dec 08, 2025 8:05 am Credit to both teams for a very hard-fought game. Waverly shooting a total of 3 FT’s in that physical of a game @ ZT is interesting.

They got hosed a little, but also missed a bad foul on Stewart as stated, yes I am a Waverly guy, but I do feel it was a little one sided at times, especially in that little 4 call stretch where sawyer picked up the ball at the end and it was called a jump ball into a Stewart 3, BUT that being said, Waverly still had every chance in the world to win it no doubt, I think Waverly could’ve probably pulled out a little more comfortable of a win, but trace is a good team and had Waverly on fumes, probably why all the missed layups and shots at the end.OldHooper wrote: Tue Dec 09, 2025 11:10 pm Waverly shooting a total of 3 FT’s in that physical of a game @ ZT is interesting.
