... a physical game relatively speaking (I was at the Miami Trace vs Jackson game - THAT was physical) - 2 of the 3 officials that did the Jackson/Miami Trace game did the game @ the Burg soooo I KNEW that it was going to be more of a "post season" call to the game - letting the play on the court determine the outcome of the game vs ticky tac calls ... the crew did a good job - personally I would like to see more games called this way ... but I digress ... THE GAME ! ... my first eyes on the Burg as they had only played 2 games entering this one ... Ironton I had seen from the cheap seats 2 times ... in both outings Ironton had played physical at both ends, controlled the boards at both ends of the floor in each game, Layne was outstanding on the boards & scoring averaging a double double 23+ppg/11rpg , the Tigers had shown the ability to score from the perimeter - Ison/Mullins/Freeman ... great bench play on the defensive end in Zayne Williams & starter Kayden Williams ... just a really nice TEAM, that could get it done in all phases, at all levels ... Wheelersburg broke down the Ironton TEAM "game" - starting with their own defense - the Burg forced 16 Ironton turnovers - most were live turnovers that WHS took to the house - 11 of the 16 IHS miscues Wheelersburg turned into points going the other way ... 22 pts in transition for the Burg ... I didn't keep WHEN the IHS turnovers occurred but I would say that more than half were when the Pirates went into a 2-3 zone ... IHS tried to force passes inside ... advantage Pirates with their speed/quickness as a team ... Wheelersburg won the battle of the boards as they pulled down 6 offensive boards that they put back as points ... in previous games Ironton got points from the role players (Markel/Freeman/Edwards/Ison/Williams) vs South Webster this group put up 27pts/vs Minford 25pts/vs Fairland 21pts ... Wheelersburg took "some of those role players" away - as a group vs the Burg - 12 points in the game - Ison was held scoreless/Freeman scoreless ... shutdown two thirds of the 3 point scoring as Freeman/Ison had 8 threes vs the 3 opponents listed - vs Wheelersburg "0" pts / zero 3's ... Coach Prater's Pirates had a balanced attack with all 5 starters denting the napkin stat sheet and 6-4 freshman, sixth man Graer Woodward getting 4 and playing a big role in keeping Ashton Layne "in the house" with JUST 19 pts ... Wheelersburg 54 Ironton 46 a final ...
.... the opening quarter and the game pace was set by Wheelersburg's 5-8 sr guard Hunter Bivens as he took the lid off for the Burg draining a 12 ft midrange jumper followed by a 3 pointer behind the arc and a strip steal and score for the burgs first 7 pts of the game ... Ironton answered with 6-3 sr Maddix Markel on a drive & finish 2pts/ 6-3 jr Ashton Layne added a pair of buckets in the paint 4pts ... Kayden Edwards was fouled in the lane 2/2 from the FT line ... Ironton took the lead 8-7 with 3:17 on the game clock in the 1st ... WHS's Jack Doerr scored on the block 2pts/ Wheelersburg turned IHS over on 2 straight possessions each ending with transition buckets one each by 6-0 sr Braylon Tucker & 6-2 sr Landon McGraw who added "and one" to his score off the turnover 3pts ... Ironton stayed close as 5-11 sr Zayne Williams came in off the bench to add a pair of 2 pters - a rebound/putback bucket and a floater across the lane 4pts ... Wheelersburg 16 Ironton 12 after one ... in the opening period the Tigers had 3 turnovers/the Pirates took all 3 the other way for pts (6) ... in the 2nd the Burg D turned Ironton over 4 times all 4 went for layups 8 pts for the Pirates ... add in Wheelersburg finding the range from downtown - the Burg went 3/3 from behind the 3 point line ... Wheelersburg again with balanced scoring - Rucker his 2nd transition bucket of the game 4pts in the half/ Hunter Bivens added his 2nd trey 3pts and a drive & finish 2pt/ 12pts in the half , Doerr & McGraw each drained a 3 pter/while jr Xavier Miller scored 2 times in transition 4pts/freshman Graer Woodward added a transition bucket for WHS 2pts ... Ironton got all of their points from Layne 8pts including a transition slam to end the qtr ... Brycen Mullins chipped in 7pts in the period with a top of the key three pointer ... Wheelersburg 35 Ironton 27 at intermission ... the Burg D took away a lot from the Ironton offensive attack , as I looked over the napkin stats - the Tigers after the opening quarter only had 2 players score (Layne & Mullins) outside of a transition bucket by Maddix Markel in the 3rd period ... Ironton closed the gap on the scoreboard in the 3rd as IHS outscored the Burg 13-8 in the period - led by Mullins with 7pts/Layne 4 & Markel's 2pts ... the Pirates showed on the offensive boards as Rucker got a pair of putback buckets 4pts & 2/2 from the line ... McGraw with his own putback 2pts ... the turnovers through 3 qtrs the Burg with 9 and Ironton 11 ... Wheelersburg 43 Ironton 40 after 3 ... a physical, post season type game called through 3 ... the officiating was consistent as the game was decided on the court ... the Wheelersburg D turned Ironton over 5 times in the final 8 minutes, 2 going to the house for points Rucker to open the Pirate scoring 2pts/ and a steal and finish by Xavier Miller 2pts ... Rucker & Miller led the Burg on the scoresheet in the final period Rucker with 5pts/15 for the game ... Miller 4pts/8 pts ... for Ironton Layne ended his night with a putback bucket "and 1" - 3pts/ 19 pts & Mullins added his 2nd 3 ball of the game 3pts/17 for the game ... Burg 11 Tigers 6 in the 4th ... Wheelersburg 54 Ironton 46 a final ...

Re: Ironton 46 Wheelersburg 54 a final ...
Didn't realize you was at this game PFloyd. I was standing in the corner near the entrance. My preferred spot whenever I go to a game at the Burg. Great game and great atmosphere between two of the most heated rivals in southern Ohio. Wheelersburg has the 2025-2026 bragging rights so far (winning in both football and basketball). I'm sure that leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of the Ironton faithful. Both sides showed great class in not making a spectacle of themselves and letting the kids be the show. Should be another great game and atmosphere on Friday night when Waverly travels to Wheelersburg...
