... Coach Vanderhoof brought his Coal Grove Hornets to the Spartan Classic to take on the home standing Alexander Spartans in the nightcap, marque game to close down the 2025-26 classic in the Alley ... Coach Hill's Spartans showed no mercy in the opening quarter for the Hornets having to drive an hour and 30 minutes as Alexander put up 20 points on CG led by 6-2 soph PG Jace Cooper's 9pts ... the talented soph covered all of the scoring options as Cooper drained a 3 pter/ got inside to pulldown an offensive rebound & stick back 2pts/pulled up for a midrange jumper 2pts before getting a steal & going coast to coast for 2pts ... Cooper had lots of help as 6 different Spartans put points on the board - 6-0 sr Alex Bateman a transition 2pter, 6-0 sr Noah Ray knocked down a deep trey 3pts, 6-4 soph Noah Graves scored on the blocks 2pts/ off the bench for Coach Hill, Gabe Felts 6-1 jr with an offensive board and putback 2pts while 6-3 jr Owen Rouse drained a 15 footer for 2 pts ... Coach Vanderhoof said that his CG squad was down 2 starters due to injury & illness - the Hornets looked unorganized in the opening 8 minutes , working in new rotation players to fill the voids, the Hornets could only find the bottom of the bucket twice on fgs , 6-1 sr Rylan Smith with a transition bucket, taking the only AHS miscue of the quarter to the house for 2pts ... jr. Braydon Klaiber got to the rim on a drive into the paint for 2pts and the only offensive bucket in the quarter for CG ... Alexander 20 Coal Grove 6 after 1 ... on the road, long bus trip, down a couple starters, down 14 pts after one in the final game of a 6 game day of hoops - easy for a 3 win team entering the night to phone in the final 24 minutes - not this group of Hornets - Coach Vanderhoof teams play hard win or lose - THIS group are athletes and competitors .. CG chipped away at the Alexander lead in the 2nd period ... led by a pair of seniors 6-4 Caden Turner/6-1 Rylan Smith ... Turner with 5 pts to open the qtr - getting a steal & finish in transition 2pts/ before draining a three pointer from the top of the key ... Smith scored in the paint 2pts and took one of the Spartan's 4 turnovers in the period back the other way, finishing at the rim 2pts ... Braydon Klaiber didn't leave all the scoring to the seniors as the 6-1 junior scored a pair of fgs in the paint 4pts ... to get back in the game you need D , CG forced 4 Alexander turnovers with 2 going to the house for CG points ... turnovers mean fewer shots on goal for Alexander as well - held to fewer looks, shots & points - only 6 in the quarter for AHS - After scoring 9 pts in the opening 8 minutes Jace Cooper was held scoreless in the 2nd ... Noah Graves picked up 2 pts in the lane, Owen Rouse hit his 2nd midrange jumper for the game 2pts and 6-1 jr Gabe Felts got his 2nd offensive board & putback for 2pts ... Alexander 26 Coal Grove 19 at the half ... coming out of the halftime break both teams settled into a little flow at both ends - scoring in the paint and making it tough finding looks on the perimeter ... Alexander found their 6-4 lefty big man in the post Noah Graves down low on the left side of the lane - the big man finished with nice lefthanded kisses off the glass 4 pts and 2/2 from the free throw line , 6-3 jr Owen Rouse with an offensive board and putback 2pts and Jace Cooper picked up his first fg since the opening qtr scoring on a drive to the rim 2pts ... the 10 pts extended the Spartan lead as the AHS defense held CG to 8 pts in the period led by 6-2 jr James Dome's hard fought buckets in the paint - one on a rebound/stickback 2pts and a tough 2pts off the glass from on the blocks ... Smith added the only other fg for CG in the qtr scoring from in the lane 2pts ... Alexander 36 Coal Grove 27 after 3 ... 4th quarter, gut check time ... Alexander visibly a better team than in recent hoops seasons under Spartans 2nd year head man Coach Jordan Hill - a very good pg in Jace Cooper, solid young players in Noah Graves/Owen Rouse/Gabe Felts to go with good senior leadership in Alex Bateman & Noah Ray - as a group you can see the basketball talent, as a group you can see that they are all learning to play the game the right way under Coach Hill's guidance ... Coal Grove ... when I hear Coal Grove my first thoughts are of the Hornets as a football school ... I get a picture of size, physical play ... in the depleted group that Coach Vanderhoof had on the court I could see the physicality and a group of players that have TEAM pride ... the 4th quarter brought it all to the floor on both sides of the court ... the Alexander youngsters were held to 1 fg ... the talented soph Jace Cooper went 8/8 from the FT line & the only fg for the Spartans on a drive & finish 2pts , a 10 pt qtr for the sophomore ... the Coal Grove defense turned the youngsters over 5 times in the final 8 minutes ... with 4:50 on the play clock AHS held a 40-34 lead ... CG's Klaiber scored in the lane 2pts & 1, followed by a drive to the rim & finish 2pts ... a pair of 1/2 from the line from Smith & Turner for CG ... 3:10 to play still 40-34 Spartans ... Klaiber drive & finish 2pts ... 2:13 Alexander 40-37 ... Klaiber on the putback 2pts ... Caden Turner with a big 3 pter from the top of the key ... Alexander 47-42 1:03 to play ... out of a time out Turner drained another trey from the top of the key 3pts 45-47 Alexander :51.9 to play ... Braxton Patrick off the bench fouled makes 1/2 for CG 46-47 Alexander ... Rylan Smith drive to the rim score for the Hornets first lead of the game with 7.7 to play in the game 48-47 Coal Grove ... gut check by the Hornets complete ... the young Spartans still learning how to win ... Coal Grove 48 Alexander 47 a final ...
