Portsmouth freshman Mekhi Berry had a night rarely seen in SE district basketball, as he threw down 7 dunks in the JV and varsity contests vs. Manchester last Saturday. The 6-3 Berry didn't start but scored 15 points in the varsity contest, and probably had that many in the JV game. Berry's all around play (not just the dunks) with the varsity made a difference in the outcome, as the Trojans got by the Greyhounds 79-70. It seems to be trending in the direction of Berry being included into the starting lineup going forward or at least getting more varsity minutes.

Coach Aaron Smith has been very open to giving freshmen Joe Greene (now starting) and Berry their opportunity to show their skills with the varsity. Freshmen Manny Thomas, Liam Livingston, and O'Ryan Graybell also have been dressing varsity.

Pretty impressive, sounds like the future is bright in Portsmouth.

Glad to see Berry getting more varsity time. Kid is too talented to be watching 3 quarters from the bench even if he is a freshman*

Callie11: You're right......the reason I posted about this is because it is very rare to see someone with that many dunks in our SE district on 1 night. He didn't have all 7 in the varsity game. He played a couple of quarters in the JV contest.

I thought everyone knew dunks count as 2 points at every level ?

Basketball today is nothing like how it used to be!!! So much more physical back in the day. Wasn’t uncommon to see 15+ dunks in a game. It’s soft boy basketball now

I had 14 in one quarter as a freshman. No one talking about that anymore either. Wasn’t allowed to do it anymore because the upperclassmen got jealous. I can still dunk too. Can you?

My son was dunking in jr high. In the 5 years he played jr high he had more dunks than anyone at the school. Who knows how many he would have had in high school if the state wouldn’t have said he was to old to play.
