... I'm thinking the key napkin stat of the night was the 3hr 11minute drive back to the Hocking Hills from Wheelersburg - thank you Mother Nature ... all on me as I wanted to see the Burg Introduction light/court graphic/photo show ... I NEEDED to see it :D - it's darn cool if you haven't seen it yet ... thought this would be a good matchup of Portsmouth West's length/ 1-3-1 zone trapping D vs the Burg ... not the scoring I thought I might see BUT still 2 good teams going at in SOC3 action ...

... Consistency or lack of it was the down fall of the Senators tonight ... Will Kegley has been THE GUY, Mr. Consistency for Coach McClanahan all season, the 6-3 sr. is averaging a double double for the season 20+ ppg and 10+ rpg, it's the rest of the team that tonight provided little support through at least 1/2 of the game ... Kegley had the only points for the Senators in the opening quarter 10pts (a transition bucket 2 pts/ back to back offensive boards and putbacks for pts 4pts/ followed by a pair of up & under moves splitting a pair of defenders shots in the lane 4pts) ...Wheelersburg countered with a balanced attack in the first 8 minutes ... West's 1-3-1 DID force 4 Pirate turnovers in the first period , but in the end team scoring overcame the turnovers & the West Siders as Hunter Bivens scored on a drive to the rim 2pts/ Xavier Miller added 2pts at the rim missing the &1 2pts ... off the Burg bench 6-3 freshman Graer Woodward scored in the paint 2pts ... off guard, Braylon Rucker grabbed a pair offensive boards and converted on 2 stickback buckets 4pts before Hunter Bivens drained deep trey for 3pts/5 in the qtr for the senior PG ... Wheelersburg 13 Portsmouth West 10 after 1 ... I thought I'd see more perimeter scoring from both teams ... in the opening quarter Wheelersburg went 1 for 6 from behind the arc while West came up empty from behind the 3 point line 0/6 ... quarter number 2 wasn't any better for West as the Senators were 0/4 from downtown ... Kegley again was the only player to put up points 5 in the quarter until late in the period when Braxton Kammer made a nice move in the paint to finish at the rim for 2 pts ... only 7 pts for the Senators ... Wheelersburg although not lighting it up on the scoreboard, equaled it's first quarter offensive output with 13 points ... again a more balanced attack as 5 WHS players put up points ... the West 1-3-1 defense although putting pressure in the forecourt above the top of the key, allows for long range shots in either corner/wings ... Wheelersburg was taking better care of the ball (only 2 turnovers), found the shots on the wings/corner knocking down 2 of 6 three pointers in the 2nd - Hunter Bivens drained his 2nd trey of the game 3 pts and Xavier Miller added his first of the game 3pts ... Jack Doerr scored in the paint 2pts/ Brew Hanzel went 3/4 from the free throw line/ and Graer Woodward intercepted a cross court pass that he took coast to coast 2pts ... Wheelersburg 26 West 17 after 2 quarters ... coming out of the locker room West turned up the pressure, trapping out front ... Wheelersburg had 4 touches and 4 turnovers in the early part of the 3rd period as West pulled within 5 at 21-26 at the 6:28 mark of the period ... in all the Burg had 7 miscues in the 3rd period ... was held to 8 pts - Bivens hit his 3rd triple of the night, Landon McGraw, strapped with foul trouble in the first half hit a trey 3pts/Jack Doerr added 2 pts at the rim from the right block ... thru 2 quarters the West offense WAS Will Kegley, the 6-3 senior had 15 of the Senators 17 points ... Kegley was guarded by the 6-3 freshman Graer Woodward who made Kegley work for every attempt on goal and every point made, in the 3rd Kegley scored on a steal/score 2pts ... 2 hard earned buckets in the paint 4pts and 1/2 from the line 7pts in the qtr/22 on the game ... Braxton Krammer added a pair of buckets - a midrange jumper 2pts and West's first 3 pointer of the game 5pts/ Cristian Quirasco stepped up and scored on a nice move baseline finishing at the rim 2pts ... the Senators with more production outside of Kegley were back in the game ... Wheelersburg 34 West 31 after 3 ... thru 3 quarters West's Will Kegley had put up points in all 3 quarters/22 for the game ... in the 4th Woodard kept Kegley out for the scoring column ... West got scoring from Cristian Quirasco - 2 scores at the rim on a pair of dribble drives 4pts/ Owen Richards added 2/2 from the line 2pts/ Logan McIntire scored his first and only points of the game in the 4th- a trey from beyond the arc 3pts and a drive and finish 2pts / Braden Adkins hit only the 3rd three pointer of the game for West ... the Senators got to within 2 pts with 4:39 to play on the clock 35-37 ... Wheelersburg then went on an 11-3 run led by 3 triples in a row - all from out on Rte 52 by Hunter Bivens as the sr. PG/SG hit threes #4,5 & 6 on the game ...Xavier Miller closed out the game going 6/6 from the line ... the Burg went 9/10 in the final 8 minutes from the charity stripe ... Wheelersburg 52 Portsmouth West 45 a final ...

Good write up pfloyd! If I knew you were there I would have came and said hello. We got it close like you said but Bivens hit some big 3s late. Congrats to the Pirates on the win, should be another dandy when they come down 52 to the Rock in a few weeks.

That defense west has is scary good. But they need a consistent 2nd scoring option that can consistently get buckets

... I totally agree wobycat ... I thought McIntire would be that guy ... but again teams like Wheelersburg have defensive players who can take away or make it difficult for the supporting cast to score the ball (ie. McIntire's 3 point shooting/scoring) ... South Webster did the same thing - had defenders that made life difficult for McIntire & the supporting cast ... the freshman Graer Woodward for Wheelersburg did an outstanding job on Kegley - I get it he scored 22 points BUT he EARNED everyone of them ... no one else for West scored in double digits - defense wins 'ships ...

west is a solid team but just can’t seem to figure it out offensively. If they do they gotta be favorite to win d6 district but if they don’t, there’s a few teams that could knock them out as early as dust semis

Burg looking great, Woodward has adjusted to varsity much faster than i thought.

… Woodward is a very very good freshman - his defense alone will give him tons of playing time … he looks very comfortable around the rim offensively… as soon as he decides he is comfortable on the perimeter with his shot he will be the complete package … looking forward to following him the next 3 1/2 years … he’s already a good one …

West can really control the flow of the game with their defense. It is just so hard to play against.

But on the huge floor at the convo, it may be a little tougher against Valley, Peebles or NA when playing for what may be a district title.

The Senators will need someone else to step up and be capable of getting 15-18 if Will gets held in check.
