... MSL vs MVL ... Circleville vs Sheridan equals "physical" basketball/football ... there really was no flow to the game on the offensive end as both teams defensively dictated the play of the offensive team ... when I tallied up the turnovers the numbers showed that BOTH teams did an excellent job taking care of the ball with Sheridan having 7 miscues to Circleville's 8 ... no real rhythm to either offense BUT still a good game to watch from the cheap seats, Coach Callahan for the Tigers of Circleville said that he knew it would be THIS type of game - the Sheridan physicality, that he wanted his team to play in just such a game having to deal with both the physicality and the inconsistent flow in the play on the court ...
... a slow start to the opening quarter for Sheridan as the Generals could only generate 6 points with but 2 fgs to show on the napkin stat sheet ... 6-3 jr. Tyce Whiteman got the Generals on the board going 1/2 from the FT line ... 5-11 sr. Canyon Daly got the Generals first FG of the contest getting into the lane for 2pts ...6-0 sr. Owen Cains capped the SHS scoring with a three pointer 3 pts ... for the Round Town Tigers they were led by their outstanding PG 6-1 Cole Nungester, the senior dropped a triple from behind the arc 3pts/ 6-5 jr Blain Fowler added 2pts from in the paint to go with a make make from the foul line 4pts/ Nungester took over from there as he scored in transition 2pts and drained his 2nd three ball of the quarter 3pts/ 8 pts to open the game ... Circleville 12 Sheridan 6 after 1 ... if you could pick out a quarter where something that looked like "an offensive flow" could be seen it was the second 8 minutes as Sheridan put up 10 pts to Circleville's 14 in the period ... Logan Russell, 6-3 jr. post player, went 3/6 from the FT line (3/8 on the game thru 2 qtrs) / 6-3 jr Tyce Whiteman hit a deep three from the top of the key 3pts and added a floater in the paint 2pts / 6-2 jr Colin Mallernee chipped a 2pts on a dribble drive & score at the rim 2pts ... the Tigers spread the wealth/scoring as Fowler put the ball on the floor for a drive & score 2pts missing on the & 1 / 6-4 sr Riley Jenkins with an offensive board and stickback for 2pts/ Nungester went coast to coast to muscle his way for 2 pts in transition/ 6-1 jr Glavine Bigam scored from in the paint on a contested shot down low 2pts/ Nungester never to back down from physical contact used his strength to get to the rim for 2pts/ 6-5 sr Ed Kirk came off the Tiger bench to add a pair of hard earned buckets down low - the first on strong drive & finish for 2 pts and the 2nd bucket scoring thru contact in the paint 2pts ... Circleville 26 Sheridan 16 at the half ... watching from the cheap seats, even though Circleville held a 10-12 point lead you could just feel that the Generals weren't "out of the game" ... every score that CHS had was "through contact"- nothing easy ... if the ball stopped bouncing the Tigers' way and Sheridan had a few bounces go their way - this would be a game ... the 3rd seemed to be a battle of attrition - shots went up at both ends with the shooters having to deal with physical contact whether you had the ball in your hands or trying to cut through the lane or going for a rebound ... when the smoke cleared after the 8 minute period Sheridan HAD closed the gap (some) outscoring the Tigers 10-7 ... 6-1 so. Graham Anderson scored on a drive to the rim 2pts/Mallernee hit a 12 footer 2pts/ Russell scored on an offensive board and putback 2pts missing on the & 1/ the jr. made his presence felt again as the strong junior scored from down on the block 2pts / the Generals' scoring was capped by a Whiteman 15 footer 2pts ... C'ville had one of those quarters where nothing fell, players attention was on the physical play at both ends of the floor- THIS was what Coach Callahan wanted his Tigers to feel when he scheduled this matchup - Nungester again showed why he is one of the best PGs and scorers inside or outside in the Southeast district as he took the ball into the paint, used his body to get position, took the hit and scored 2pts missing on the & 1 ... the only other scoring was Blain Fowler, the 6-5 jr. got in the paint, powered up for 2pts then drained a trey from behind the 3 point line 5pts in the qtr ... Circleville 33 Sheridan 26 after 3 ... physical play, no rhythm to the offenses ... Sheridan outscored Circleville in the 4th 16-15 ... the Generals had 6 fgs to 3 fgs for the Tigers in the final 8 minutes ... in the closing seconds of the game Sheridan got the score to one possession with 11.4 to play on the clock ... @ 3:51 on the clock Sheridan led 37-31 ... Nungester & Kirk each with a bucket in the paint 4pts for CHS ... for Sheridan Russell hit 1 of 4 FTS/ Cains with a drive & score 2pts/ Russell finished a steal & score 2pts ... Circleville extended the lead to 40-31 with 2:54 to play - Nungester seemed to thrive on the physical as the 6-1 sr. drove to the rim finished 2pt & 1-3pt play ... at 1:36 on the game clock SHS had closed to 35-41 ... Mallernee with bucket on the block 2pts/Cains with his 2nd drive & finish of the period 2pts ... Circleville had nothing but free throws to show for the final almost 3 minutes of the game going 9/15 from the charity stripe in the quarter ... Sheridan inched closer as Whiteman had a make make from the line 2pts/ Anderson hit a deep triple from the left corner 3pts/ Russell scored on a putback 2pts ... 44-42 ... 11.4 to play ... Circleville finished off the game with Jack Kline going 4/4 from the line to close out all scoring ... Circleville 48 Sheridan 42 a final ...
