South Point vs. River Valley Complete Game Recap

Post by Layne99L »

Pointers win thriller against River Valley
By: T. J. Layne

SOUTH POINT, OH-The South Point Pointers have won three of their first four games by at least 15 points. Friday’s game against River Valley was certainly not that way though, as the Pointers faced their toughest opponent of the season in their second conference game of the year.

River Valley held the lead for most of the opening quarter but a late run by South Point saw the first quarter end in a 13-13 tie. Early in the second quarter, the Pointers built a four point lead, but saw that go away fast as several fast break points put the Raiders up by as many as ten. The first half ended with a 35-27 River Valley lead with both teams over ten team fouls. Todd Mayo was South Point’s leading scorer with 11 points.

Like they have done for nearly every game this season, the Pointers came out strong to begin the third quarter with an 11-2 run to take a 38-37 lead. From there, the game went back and forth as River Valley led the mid part of the quarter, with South Point going on a run to end the third quarter with a 51-47 lead.

To start the fourth quarter, the Pointers built their lead to as many as seven points, but saw the Raiders come back to lead the game 63-61 in the final two minutes. The next Pointers possession saw Chase Kratzenberg go back down the court to hit a three pointer to give South Point a 64-63 lead. River Valley missed their next shot down the floor and then fouled Todd Mayo to put him at the line for two shots. Mayo made one of the two shots to give the Pointers a 65-63 lead with just over 40 seconds left. However, the Raiders went back down the floor to tie the game at 65 with only 19 seconds left. Coming off the timeout, Zach Woody hit the game winning shot with only two seconds left to keep the Pointers undefeated on the season!

Todd Mayo was the leading scorer of the game for South Point with 21 points. Beau Weed and Zach Woody were second on Pointers scoring with 10 points each. Junior Drew Lynd came off the bench to score 8 points. The game saw seven lead changes and seven ties. The Pointers also took the JV game 60-21.

The Pointers will be back in action on Tuesday, December 18th to open up the new gym against the Portsmouth Trojans. The Lady Pointers will be in action next in a road game on Saturday, December 15th at Wayne. The Lady Pointers game that was cancelled against Rock Hill on Thursday, December 13th, will now be played on January 3rd. Tuesday’s action is set to start at 6:00 pm with the JV game and the varsity game at 7:30 pm. For more information visit http://www.geocities.com/southpointbasketball .
