Gallipolis whips Marietta in league finale, 55-25
Gallipolis senior David Rumley, a 6-4 post player, saved his last home for his best performance of the season Saturday night to lead the Gallia Academy Blue Devils to a surprisingly easy 55-25 win over visiting Marietta in a Day of Champions game, thus GAHS earned a seventh place finish in the 2007-08 final Southeastern Ohio Athletic League standings.
Rumley tossed in 24 points and picked off 18 rebounds for the Blue Devils, who improved their season mark to 7-13, GAHS finished league play with a 4-10 mark this winter. The Gallians open post-season tournament play Friday, Feb. 15, against Fairfield Union in an 8:30 p.m. game at Wellston.
Nine of the 11 Blue Devils playing entered the scoring column during Senior Night in the GAHS gym. Kyle Mitchell added nine points and six rebounds, John Troester five, Chris McCoy five and Quinton Nibert four points and five rebounds in the triumph.
Zack Arnold paced Marietta with 10 points while Christian Hudspeth five. The GAHS victory avenged a 49-41 setback to Marietta on the Gallipolis boards on Jan. 4.
Five Gallipolis seniors were honored prior to the game. Playing their final home game were Rumley, Chris McCoy and Zack Brown. Also recognized were seniors Cole Jones and Jeff Golden, who missed the entire season because of injuries.
Gallipolis led 8-4 after one period. It was 22-8 during halftime. The Blue Devils were on top 38-14 going into the final period.
Both coaches emptied their benches with 4:36 left in the game.
Gallipolis connected on 22 of 39 field goal attempts for 57.8 percent. At the line, Gallipolis was 11 of 19 for 57.8 percent. GAHS had 19 personals, 43 rebounds, and 21 turnovers, eight in the second period. GAHS was held scoreless behind the three point line in four attempts.
Gallipolis had 11 assists, five by McCoy, 10 steals, six by McCoy, and the team had 16 deflections.
Marietta connected on eight of 41 field goal attempts for 19.5 percent. The Tigers were eight of 17 at the line, had 20 personals picked off 18 rebounds and had 11 turnovers.
The Tigers finished regular season play with a 6-14 mark and finished 4-10 in SEOAL play, ending up eighth in the standings. Marietta will play Sheridan at 6 p.m. in the sectional tournament at Wellston on Friday, Feb. 15.
In the preliminary game, the GAHS Blue Imps piled up a 11-4 first period lead, and were on top 21-16 at halftime, but Marietta used a 15-6 scoring rush in the third period to take a 31-27 lead into the final period.
The Blue Imps pulled within two points, 40-38, with 9.9 seconds left, but the Tigers iced it at the foul line for a 43-38 victory. The GAHS reserves finished 12-8 on the year and 7-7 in league play. Marietta finished 7-13 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Tiger win avenged an earlier 41-39 loss to Gallipolis on Jan. 4.
Dylan Hunter led Gallipolis’ scoring attack with mine points. Cory Eberhard added eight, Nate Alllison and Nick Mitchell six each and Chuck Calvert five. Keith Schwendemen led Marietta with 10 points and Adam Arnold added eight.

Couple Tigers were missing
Couple of Tigers were missing because of grade problems, plus Blue Devils played their best defensive game of the season.
