Chesapeake drops Gallipolis, 50-33

Gallipolis was unable to stop 6-0 sophomore guard Nathan Copley at Chesapeake Tuesday night and the result was a 50-33 season-opening loss to the Panthers.

Copley popped in 24 points, had three steals and picked off eight rebounds for the winners.

No one else was in double figures for CHS. Kyle Webb added eight markers, and Trent Saunders seven points.

For Gallipolis, Kyle Mitchell was high man with nine points before fouling out in the final period. Mitchell also picked off seven of Gallia Academy’s 27 rebounds. Chris Armstrong added six rebounds before reinjuring an ankle in the third quarter. He was limited to three points by the Panther defense. Jordan Cornwell and John Troester tallied six points apiece for the Gallians.

GAHS connected on 12 of 37 field goal attempts for 32.4 percent. The Blue Devils were seven of 11 at the line for 63.6 percent. Gallipolis committed 21 personal fouls and 28 costly turnovers, nine each in the first two quarters against the Panthers pressure defense.

Chesapeake sank 15 of 45 field goal attempts for 33.3 percent. At the line, CHS was 14 of 23 for 60.8 percent. CHS had 16 personals, 27 rebounds, 15 steals and eight assists in the victory. GAHS forced 21 turnovers.

Gallipolis will open its home season on Saturday against Athens in a non-league battle. It will be a tripleheder. The freshman game starts at 5 p.m. Chesapeake plays North Adams in the OU Classic at Athens Saturday, starting at 5:45 p.m..

In the preliminary game, Gallipolis rallied from a 34-33 deficit with 1:37 remaining to edge the Panther Cubs, 43-37.

After Chesapeake’s Pat Hintz gave the Cubs a 34-33 lead on a pair of free throws with 1:53 left, Gallipolis’ Nate Allison got a put back and free throw with 1:37 left to put the Blue Imps on top, 36-34. A pair of free throws by Drew Brock tied the score at 36-all, followed by a free toss by Tyler Eastman with 1:22 remaining to put the Blue Imps ahead for keeps.

Austin Wilson made it 38-36 with 46.1 seconds left. Allison picked off a key rebound off Wilson’s missed free throw and was fouled on the play with 44.3 seconds left. Allison sank both free ttosses to give GAHS a 40-36 edge.

Brock canned one of two freebies with 24.3 left with Allison coming down with the rebound. In the final seconds, Cory Eberhard canned three of four free throws to seal the win.

For Gallipolis, Allison paved the way with 17 points. Austin Wilson followed with seven, Chuck Calvart six, Eberhard and Eastman five each, Jordan Cornwell two and Jared Golden one Austin McMaster led CHS with 16 points.

Gallipolis led 10-6, and 19-13 after two quarters. It was tied 25-all going into the final period.

Yes. Sprained his ankle on Saturday, Nov. 29, in scrimmage against Eastern of Meigs. Should be back by Dec. 15.

Out almost another year for a sprained ankle???? Nov 15??? Gotcha!!!!

Jottings goofed on return date. Whaley should be back by Monday, Dec. 15.
