Chillicothe tops Gallipolis, 33-21
Second place Chillicothe downed host Gallipolis 33-21 in a low-scoring Southeastern Ohio Athletic League makeup game Monday evening on the Gallia Academy hardwood in Centenary.
The triumph left the Cavs with a 10-5 season record and 9-2 SEOAL mark. Gallipolis dropped to 6-9 overall and 3-8 inside the league.
Gallipolis, weather permitting, will host Jackson Tuesday evening in another SEOAL tripleheader. Chillicothe will travel to Logan.
Chillicothe’s defense held GAHS scoreless the first 6:21 of play in the initial period until Jarod Golden’s tapin with 1:39 left. Chuck Calvart’s goal with 59 seconds left in the quarter cut Chillicothe’s lead to 7-4.
John Troester’s jump shot (7:21) cut the Cavs lead to 7-6 to start second quarter play but goals by Mike Turner and Jalen Ragland gave CHS a 11-6 lead with 4:46 left in the half.
Troester hit a three-pointer (4:07) then Malik London’s goal put CHS on top 13-9 at the 3:41 mark. Corey Eberhard’s trey pulled GAHS within one, 13-12 at the 3:28 mark, but CHS ended the period with a four-point run to take a 17-12 first half lead.
Chillicothe actually put the game away in the third stanza by outscoring Gallia Academy, 10-2, to take a 27-14 lead into the final period. Calvart’s short jumper (1:37) was the only Blue Devil goal in the quarter. London had two goals and Turner three for CHS.
Nick Mitchell’s two free throws (7:52) and Ethan Moore's layup (7:11) cut Chillicothe’s lead to 27-18, and later, Golden’s short jumper (3:45) pulled GAHS within eight, 29-21, but the Cavs outscored GAHS 4-0 during the final 2:10 of play to earn the victory.
Turner paced CHS in scoring with 14 points. Malik London added seven points and Ragland six. For GAHS, Troester was tops with five points. Golden and Calvart added four each while Mitchell and Eberhard each had three points.
Gallipolis was eight of 32 from the field for 25 percent. Gallipolis was two of 12 behind the arc. The Gallians were three of six at the line for 50 percent. GAHS had 22 rebounds, six each by Golden and Troester. GAHS had 15 personals and 15 turnovers.
Chillicothe was 14 of 40 from the field for 35 percent. The Cavs were five of seven at the line for 71.4 percent. Chillicothe picked off 30 rebounds, nine by Turner. CHS had five personals and 12 turnovers.
Gallipolis’ freshmen rallied from a 32-18 deficit in the second half to down the CHS yearlings, 37-35. Jim Clagg’s layup with 1:30 left put the Gallians up 35-33, and his foul shots with .02 left clinched the triumph.
Chillicothe led 32-18 with 5:22 left to play in the game, but GAHS outscored the visitors 19-5 to post its 11th victory against five setbacks. Chillicothe dropped to 7-5 on the year.
Jim Clagg led GAHS with 14 points. T. J. McCalla added nine and Nick Clagg seven in the win. T. Beard paced CHS with 13 points. A. Bixler added 12.
Chillicothe led 9-7, 21-12 and 26-18 at the quartermarks.
In the preliminary contest, GAHS pulled out a 57-50 win over the Cav JVs.
Gallipolis led 11-10, 22-17 and 42-37 at the quartermarks. The victory improved GAHS’ record to 7-8 on the year and 4-7 in league play. Chillicothe dropped to 3-11 overall and 3-8 in league action.
Joel Johnston and Tyler Eastman paced the Blue Imps with 10 points each. Bryce Amos and Joe Jenkins added nine each, Nick Saunders eight and Drew Young seven. Aaron Elliott led CHS with 20 points. Nate Gibson and Cameron Lowe each finished with eight points.
