Jackson County will indeed be well-represented at Sunday’s annual Ohio High School Basketball Coaches’ Association North-South senior all-star games. That’s because three county players have been selected for participation -- Jackson’s Dylan Newsom and Oak Hill’s Kyle Ondera and Karissa Adkins.

All are members of the South squads, as the trio will partake in three separate games. Newsom will be playing in the Division I-II boys, Ondera the Division III-IV boys, and Adkins the Division III-IV girls. Adkins and her South teammates tip off the quartet of games at noon, followed by the girls Division I-II game at 1:45 p.m. Ondera and the Division III-IV boys play at 3:30 p.m., followed by Newsom and the Division I-II boys at 5:15 p.m. The four all-star tilts are set for Sunday at Capital University’s Capital Center in Bexley.

Newsom, Ondera and Adkins are all chosen for the North-South contests through their selection as the District 13 Coaches Association representatives for the games.
District 13 covers the southeastern-most district in the state, and includes schools encompassing Jackson, Vinton, Gallia, Lawrence, Meigs, Hocking, Washington and Athens counties.

Oak Hill boys basketball coach Norm Persin is the longtime District 13 Director.

Newsom and Adkins, in addition, were named District 13 Players of the Year in their respective divisions.

Newsom notched the honor in Division I-II boys, while Adkins amassed the award in Division III girls.

Adkins is a two-time Division III District 13 POY.

This season, she averaged 16.2 points per game and helped lead the Lady Oaks to an undefeated regular season and the Division III regional runner-up.

Newsom netted 20 points per outing, and nearly notched a double-double with nine rebounds.

He anchored the Ironmen to an improved nine-win season.

Ondera, two years removed from capturing the Division IV District 13 Player of the Year award, earned Division III runner-up honors to Ironton’s Tim Kochendoerfer.

He averaged 20 points per game this past winter, and led the Oaks to the school’s first-ever undefeated regular season.

That coming on the heels of the Oaks’ historic 2009 Division IV state championship.

Ondera joined J.D. Hale as the second North-South representative from Oak Hill in as many seasons.

Adkins is the latest Lady Oak to compete, and Newsom is the first Ironman or Ironlady to be selected since Jackson’s Reid Arnold and Victoria Leali landed the honors four years ago.

Wellston’s Brant Derrow played in the North-South contest six seasons back.

Adkins and Newsom were also their respective school’s winners of the Wendy’s High School Heisman award.

Ondera and Kochendoerfer are joined on the Division III-IV South squad by three players from District 14, including Wes Loop of South Webster, which is a member of the Southern Ohio Conference Division II along with Oak Hill.

Kirk Maxwell of Zane Trace and J.P. McFarland of Southeastern are on that same South team.

Sina King of Waterford, the District 13 Division IV girls POY, joins Adkins on that South squad along with Kayla Cook of South Webster.

Adkins also teams up with Megan Campbell of Versailles, which Oak Hill edged 43-41 in the 2009 Division III state semifinals.

Newsom is joined on his South club by Adam Blake of Logan Elm, as Logan Elm is a member of District 14.

Doug Stiverson of Logan Elm is Newsom’s coach for the game.

Tickets for the games cost $8, and are good for any and all of the four games.

Academic all-Ohio

Newsom and Ondera are also members of the OHSBCA all-Ohio academic teams, as announced this week by the association.

Newsom is a member of the Division II boys and Ondera for Division III boys.

Both senior standouts sport perfect 4.0 grade point averages.

Wheelersburg boys coach Tom Barrick is the academic all-Ohio chairman for the OHSBCA.

Other all-star games

Sunday’s North-South tilts are the second of two all-star games in a span of eight days for Adkins and Ondera.

Both played for the Ohio team in Saturday’s Ohio-Kentucky contests at Thomas More College in Kentucky.

Adkins scored six points in the girls game.
