Chesapeake runs past GAHS, 77-22

Post by jottings »

Host Chesapeake opened its 2010-11-basketball campaign with a resounding 77-22 non-league victory over visiting Gallipolis Friday evening.

Ohio’s defending Division III regional champions, and 2009-10 state finalists trailed the Gallians only once in the 32-minute contest—7-6 on a lay-up by Nick Saunders with 2:56 left in the quarter.

After that, the Panthers smothering defense forced 29 GAHS turnovers and went on to outscore the visitors 71-15 the remainder of the contest.

CHS led 17-9 after one period and 32-14 at halftime. The Panthers upped their lead to 54-21 going into the final eight minutes and outscored GAHS 23-1 during the last period to win by a margin of 55 points, Gallipolis’ worst basketball loss since a 57-point beating (83-26) by former SEOAL member Pomeroy during the 1959-60 campaign.

Chesapeake placed four players in double-figure scoring led by Austin McMaster’s 18 points. Colin Kennedy added 17 while Jav Thompson and Pat Hintz added 10 apiece. Nate Copley finished with seven markers.

The Panthers sank 30 of 66 field goal attempts for 45.4 percent. CHS was 2 of 12 behind the arc. At the line, Chesapeake hit 15 of 17 free throws for a sizzling 88.2 percent. The winners picked off 34 rebounds, led by Colin Kennedy’s 12 snags. The Panthers had just seven turnovers, recorded 21 assists and had 13 steals. CHS had 17 personal fouls.

Nick Saunders and Jared Golden led GAHS with five points apiece.

From the field, Gallipolis sank eight of 31 field goal attempts for 25.8 percent. Gallipolis was four of nine at the line for 44.4 percent. The Blue Devils picked off 16 rebounds, six by Jared Golden. Ethan Moore had five snags. GAHS had 29 turnovers and 15 personals.

Gallipolis, now 1-2 overall, is scheduled to host Athens Saturday in a tripleheader with the freshman game starting at 5:30 p.m. It will be the Blue Devils 2010-11 home opener. Chesapeake will travel to Rock Hill Tuesday for its Ohio Valley Conference opener.

In Friday’s reserve game, the host Cubs swamped GAHS 46-31 for the Blue Imps first loss in three outings. Chesapeake led 12-2, 22-15 and 34-24 at the quartermarks.

Justin Bailey led the Blue Imps with 15 points. Mike Duffield led Chesapeake with 12 points.

Thanks. Didn't have any programs and could not read my chicken scratches. In fact, never had a program on Devils' first three road games against OVC opponents.

Years ago everyone called the JV game the reserve game, nothing to bust someone's chops over. Just saying if you don't like how the stats were posted, post them yourself. I appreciate all the time Jottings puts into this.

Chesapeake was not a State finalist last year. They were beat by LCC in the state semi.

They made it farther than Piketon :) Final 4 is a "finalist" in my book.

Here's their schedule Pfloyd. My suggestion is that December 28th game vs Ironton. That will be a doozy and shake things up on your elite 8 a little imo.

Nothing against Athens but the way they have started off they may not be much of a matchup for Chesapeake in the Beasts tourney.
