Time To Step Down?

Post by interception »

When should a coach realize it is time to step down and let new blood, ideas and enthusiasm into the program? The program at our school is steadily declining. Major changes have already taken place within the athletic scene here but many in the community were also hoping a change would take place in the boys program. When God given talent is there the program does okay, if not, it really suffers. This coach has done an admirable job when he has talent but nothing changes. The kids are bored. Same thing every summer. Nothing changes and based on where the program ended last year change is needed. One would hope that the coach would see that it is time for new ideas and step down.

Mainly general but it certainly could also be applied specifically. When a program is stagnent, no changes, same ole' every year, then it needs to have a new shot of enthusiasm, new ideas. There comes a time when a coach needs to receive the thank yous for their time and energy over the years and realize that for the betterment of the program, for growth, it may be time to hand the reins over. That doesn't mean they are a bad coach, just time for a change.

Some don't know when to stop coaching.
