Trimble 59 Fairfield Leesburg 48 District Final final D4

Post by pfloyd »

Trimble 59
Fairfield Leesburg 48 a final

... 2 similar looking teams, Coach Howie Caldwell's Tomcats with not a single senior in sight , loaded for a run in 2021-22 ain't even thinking NEXT season ... Trimble is playing for the here and now ... no Convo , no problem there is still a post season road & destination to set their sights on and follow to get to Regional play, the Sweet 16 ... in their path a Cinderella team from Fairfield Leesburg, the Lions out of the SHAC look physically a lot like Trimble ... BOTH teams get after you defensively, looking to score out of the transition game with the Lions relying more on the 3 point shot ... GOOD GAME ! physical game from both teams ... Howie doesn't have over 500+ wins by not winning games vs teams who are "similar" .... if the teams matchup on paper - usually means advantage Howie + Tomcats ... Trimble 59 Fairfield 48 a final ...

... the opening period made me tired just watching as both teams got up and down the court ... Trimble playing man to man on D, working the ball trying to find openings to the rim and at the rim ... Fairfield applied pressure on the perimeter from the 1/2 court trap between the rings - worked early on as Trimble turned the ball over 7 times in the opening quarter ... it didn't help matters as the main ballhandler Tyler Weber picked up 2 early fouls sending the junior pg to the bench ... Fairfield was an equal opportunity "turnover" participant as the Lions coughed up the ball 5 times on their own in the first 8 minutes ... scoring in the opening period was again fairly equal as all 6 players for Trimble who saw the floor contributed in the scorebook, each with a bucket apiece - Trimble went 2/2 from behind the arc - Will Freeborn/Austin Wisor a triple each ... with 2 pointers from Tucker Dixon/Blake Guffey/Bryce Downs ... for the Lions Reese Teeters dropped a triple & a pair for 2 pointers and a plus 1 for 8 points/ Koden Zink added 4 pts/Jon Bentley a 2 pointer and Connor Priest converted a triple after a Tomcat turnover to give Fairfield a 3 point lead after one Fairfield 17 Trimble 14 after one ... Trimble works hard to get the ball into the hands of their "BIGS" Blake Guffey & Bryce Downs ... the 2nd qtr. saw both putting the Tomcats on their broad shoulders to forge into the lead going into intermission ... both Guffey/Downs struggled with shooting under the physicality of the Fairfield interior play ... missed putbacks kept the score closer than it appeared it should have been ... Guffey put 9 points on the napkin stat sheet going 5/6 from the FT line , Downs with 5 pts and a chip in 2 pointer from Tyler Weber ... the 16 point quarter offensively combined with holding the Lions to 10 points gave Trimble the lead going into the half ... the Lions were kept in the ballpark going 0/5 from three point land ... Teeters added 4 points (12 pts in the half) , Zink 4 pts/Bentley 2 to finish the scoring for FHS ... Trimble 30 Fairfield 27 at the half ... both teams came out after the half in a defensive stance ... Trimble was held to 10 points/Fairfield scored 9 ... the Tomcats were turned over 5 times (16 turnovers thru 3 periods) ... Fairfield had 4 turnovers of their own with THS getting 2 transition buckets off of the miscues ... Trimble was held to 4 fgs in the period - Downs 5pts/Weber 3/Guffey 2 for the Lions Teeters continued to pace FHS adding 6 pts with a 3 ball from Brayden Zimmerman ... Trimble 40 Fairfield 36 after 3 ... the 4th period was won by the Tomcats 19-12 ... too much solid defense , didn't turn the Lions over but didn't give them the looks they wanted or needed Teeters got his - 7 pts with a three included , 1/7 from downtown, no other fgs until a last shot of the game two from Wyatt Collins off the bench ... Zimmerman added 3 points on 3/4 from the FT line ... Tomcats got points from the 2 BIGS down low 9 points from Guffey , 6 more from Bryce Downs ... Weber adding 2 points in transition and a couple FTs from Austin Wisor ... Trimble takes the SE District final ... Trimble 59 Fairfield Leesburg 48 a final ...

... Coach Howie Caldwell is taking his Tomcats to the Sweet 16 ... Trimble will take on Berlin Hiland a fixture in post season Regional action ... not a "pretty" game by any means today BUT when you mix it up in the post season the only good outcome is to survive and advance - mission accomplished ... one of the announcers on the livestream mentioned that the Tomcats are often referred to as a bunch of football players playing basketball ... more to the point Trimble is a bunch MULTI-SPORT ATHLETES playing hoops as well as any team in SEO in D4 ... congratulations and the best of luck to the Tomcats next week vs Berlin Hiland ...

Pfloyd, great job as usual. Trimble, with only 4 attempted 3 pointers, that's about as few a 3 point attempts that you're going to see in a game, or is that pretty typical for a Howie coached team?

... they don't take a lot of them - averaging 12 or so but Fairfield had a lot to do with the low number today - stingy defensive effort by the Lions ...

Thank you. About what size are Trimble's inside players?

... the BIGS for Trimble are Guffey at 6-1or 6-2 tops and Downs at 6-1 ... they are simply outstanding athletes ... love watching them play the game of basketball ... they are athletic, Guffey has broad shoulders that allow him to get space down low ... Downs is just a a hardnose , All State linebacker who has no quit in him ... I could watch Trimble play all day - tenacious, athletic, undersized, will go toe to toe with any team any time , they are all players you want on your team as they would run through walls for the TEAM ...

Great job Pfloyd. Here's to hoping the Tomcats move on. They are really physical, which is a plus in the regionals and beyond.

Told y'all Howie would have the final say in this one. He's on a mission to get back to the final 4 and Howie gets what he wants when he has the talent.
