June shootout/scrimmage results

Valley defeated Portsmouth in a 7 quarter scrimmage with 10 minute running clocks. The Indians and Trojans played mostly starters for the first 4 quarters, and Valley led all the way, building as much as a 15 point lead. PHS did cut the lead to 59-58 in the 4th period, but some costly turnovers kept the Trojans behind on the scoreboard. The Trojan bench outscored the Indians bench in the 5th and 6th quarter, but in the 7th quarter both teams played their starters and Valley won 21-14.

Valley had a big edge in 3 point shooting and that was the difference, making about 15 trifectas. The Trojans still made it competitive despite the Indians' shooting prowess. If Valley can play like that this season, they will not be an easy out for anyone and most likely will have a winning season. Portsmouth just has to guard the 3 better, but they played fast and pressed virtually the whole time which did give the Indians trouble. Opponents had better guard the perimeter on Valley, because they have 3-4 players who can knock down the 3.

Portsmouth defeated Zane Trace 96-71 in a 6 quarter scrimmage Monday night. The Trojans led from start to finish, and played much better perimeter defense than against Valley. PHS pushed the ball repeatedly up the court for quick buckets, but also showed the ability to score in the half court. ZT was without 2 starters, and their 6-8 big sprained his ankle midway in the 2nd quarter. Still, the Trojans put together a complete performance and it was their best showing of the summer. Daryionne Bryant and Kenny Sanderlin's play stood out for Portsmouth. Zane Trace will be a strong contender for the SVC crown.

The Trojans host Northwest tonight @PHS starting at 6:00 PM.

art vandelay: I'm hoping that the Trojans can translate summer success to next season's success. I've seen a lot of good things from them, and I totally agree with you about Bryant and Sanderlin. They absolutely have made a big difference in this team.

Portsmouth had a very strong performance vs. Northwest last night, as the Trojans tallied over 130 points in a rare 9 quarter scrimmage. PHS dominated from start to finish with a total team effort from the entire roster of about 12 players. The starting 5 for PHS was Daryionne Bryant, Donovan Carr, Drew Roe, Kenny Sanderlin, and Devin Lattimore. Off the bench, Tyler Duncan, DeAndre Berry and LeVaughn Cobb knocked down 3's, while Amare Johnson was a hawk on defense. The Mohawks tried to slow the tempo, but the Trojans were still able to execute in the half court offense when a fast break was not there. Defensively, Portsmouth used its quickness to create turnovers and some quick buckets.

Overall this summer there were many more positive moments for the Trojans unlike in the recent past. This group has the possibility of being the best Trojan team since 2017, when PHS posted a 17-8 overall record with a trip to the district semifinals. Still a long way to December, so hopefully everyone that plays football can survive the season without injury.

Did Northwest have all their kids.

Someone said they had a couple kids missing but thats probably a question Someone from northwest would know better especially with ssummer ball their leading scorer from.last year and another kid that looked be be 6"5 was there and looked very good , seems like they had more kids in the first scrimmage though ,I think they will have a good season.
