South Webster 66
Wheelersburg 56 a final

Wow! South Webster hadn't beaten the burg since 2017 - tonight's W didn't look like it was going to happen - for awhile ... one of those games of "2 halves" in this case 2 totally different halves ... as the Jeeps jumped out early in the first behind the shooting of 6-5 freshmen big man Eli Roberts - the smooth post/wing man dropped a dime on the Burg - hitting for 10 points including 2 deep triples to go with a pair of deuces ... chipping in for SW with 4 points each in the opening qtr. Cam Carpenter and Will Collins ... leading scorer on the young season for the Jeeps - senior PG Trae Zimmerman chipped in with a trey for 3 in the 1st ... Wheelersburg tipped it off tonight as an enigma as WE in the cheap seats had no idea where the points where coming from as WHS graduated a BIG chunk of their lineup/scoring from last season ... returning for WHS was Eli Swords - the senior had 4 points/ Cooper Mckenzie added 5 with a triple, newcomer Josh Clark looked to add solid ball handling, and aggressiveness to the Pirates lineup hitting for 4 points, & rounding out the WHS scoring Nolan Wright with a 3 ball ... South Webster 21 Wheelersburg 16 end of 1 ... Wheelersburg showed what we have come to expect from a Burg team by being physical/ getting into the lane, forcing defenders to try to keep them out of the paint - it led to getting Zimmerman for SW a seat on the bench with 2 fouls in the opening qtr ... the 2nd period had Wheelersburg taking advantage of the SW leading scorer being on the bench ... they looked like they might hit the 50 point mark by the half as the Pirates went 12/12 from the FT line, shot a blistering 73% from the field for the 1st half led by Sword's 13 points in the 2nd qtr - 3 triples, McKenzie dropped his 2nd 3 ball of the game (5 pts in the qtr) ... Clark added 6 points in the qtr/10 for the half ... in all the Burg buried the Jeeps with a 28-10 period ... with Zimmerman on the bench, the Jeeps could muster but 3 fgs in the 2nd ... Carpenter with 6 of the 10 points in the qtr. Zimmerman came in to put up a deuce ... SW looked out of sorts, back on their heels from the onslaught of Pirate scoring ... Wheelersburg 44 South Webster 31 at intermission ... SW needed to find a way to slow down the WHS offense/get some stops/chip away at the Burg lead - the Jeeps did better than slowdown the Pirates - the Pirates end of the court apparently had a lid on the basket as Wheelersburg went "0-for" the period - shooting 0% from the floor, 0% from the line ... nada ... South Webster didn't burn up the nets BUT when the opposition can't find the basket - every point cut into the 13 point lead by WHS ... Will Collins 3 points, Roberts 2, Cam Carpenter a big time 3 ball, along with a deuce & one from Zimmerman drew SW within 2 points as time was running out of the period ... 2 seconds and change on the clock, Zimmerman took a deep three from the left wing as the buzzer sounded - all net ... not only did SW get BACK into the game, they took the lead ... South Webster 45 Wheelersburg 44 after 3 ... Wheelersburg couldn't buy a basket in the 3rd,while SW was on a 14-0 run ... at the 4:56 mark of the 4th the run was 28-7 Jeeps for the 2nd half ... at 2:29 in the 4th the run was 34-7 ... at 1:15 34-9 ... as Sword hit a walk up the court in the final few seconds uncontested toss 3 ball the run was 35-12 - game , set and match ... Zimmerman took over the 4th period dropping15 points on his own ball, Carpenter added 6 pts giving him an outstanding 19 points for the game ... South Webster 66 Wheelersburg 56 a final

3 solid scorers in Sword, McKenzie, Clark ... 73% shooting from the floor in the 1st half / 100% from the line in the first half ...the Burg will get there W's this season ... WHS will be just fine this season ...

Pfloyd's official "UN-official" Napkin Stats - South Webster

Scoring ... Trae Zimmerman 26, Cam Carpenter 19, Eli Roberts 12, Will Collins 8, Connor Bender 1

TOs ... 10
PnP ... 14 fgs/ 28 points in the paint
PnT ... 2 fgs/ 4 points in transition

... Senior leadership means sooooo much in high school sports - great job tonight across the board by the Jeeps TEAM ... crashing the boards, I don't keep rebounds but the stat line on the livestream showed SW outrebounded the burg 22-8 for the game ... kudos to Connor Bender only 1 point on the offensive side but he did an outstanding job when the Jeeps went into 1/2 court pressure forcing back to back turnovers by the Burg resulting in points on the offensive end for SW ... excellent "veteran" team W tonight ...

Good rundown Pfloyd. Jeeps will need to, and will probably shoot a better percentage from the free throw line most games.

That 22-8 rebound total wasn’t accurate at all. The stats they display on the screen aren’t ever correct since they have issues with the program they use to keep track of it all

The Daily Times does a fine job with the two reporters they have to cover games. They always have a ton of information on Twitter that has links to the games they cover and the info they put in the paper.

Paul Boggs and Jacob Smith do a great job IMO

Never said the people they have didn’t go a good job. Social media has hurt the paper news industry. But I don’t have twitter or Facebook to see their “articles” so I rely on the news paper and here to read about the games. But two big games in the area last night. I’d hope they were there.

Agree, those two are passionate about their jobs and are at everything possible…no way they could get to everything. Burg/SW feels like a game one would be at but if not trying to give everyone else some coverage

PDT writers do a pretty solid job, and, agreed social media has taken away from old school print media. Also, congrats to the jeeps on a nice win.

The Daily Times coverage was excellent of the Minford/Valley and South Webster/Wheelersburg games in todays paper. There was also coverage of South Point/Portsmouth, Eastern/West, Notre Dame/Symmes Valley and New Boston/Clay.

Moving forward, I think that South Webster is going to be just fine. They need a little bit of refinement and consistency across the board. To hold anyone to 0 points in a quarter, let alone Wheelersburg, shows you their capability. The Roberts kid is going to be special. I wouldn’t be surprised to see South Webster make some serious noise in the postseason.

Burg couldn’t throw it in the ocean in that quarter. Tired legs and Webster making adjustments defending the dribble drive. Burg needs some inside scoring. Ater will have to be creative on how that will happen. Teams are just going to pack it in. Webster has three solid scorers. That’s going to be tough on a lot of teams trying to defend them.
