University of Upper Arlington 59 Waverly 50 a final

Upper Arlington 59
Waverly 50 a final

... another great game by the Waverly Tigers and Coach Robertson ... great in the simple fact that it was SCHEDULED , great in the fact that the Tigers gave the 8-0 UA Golden Bears all they wanted ... well done all around ...

... the final score is not indicative of the game ... this one was - as I think back - was back and forth for the majority of the first 3 quarters/ or at least within 1 to 2 points either way with UA gaining the lead at 5:34 in the 4th 45-44 for good ... Waverly looked to just run out of gas - not heart, not "want to" - the intensity of the game just took it's toll - a couple of missed FTs, a couple of untimely turnovers of which weren't made in the previous 3 quarters ... "fatigue" is the word I'm looking for - physical & mental ... when you get "fatigued" - execution is difficult, in a high intensity game vs a quality D1 opponent as UA - you pay for empty trips down court - poor shot selection, TOs, missed FTs ... at 5:34 in the 4th it was 45-44 UA ... at 2:15 a 6-0 UA run had the score 51-44 Bears ... 1:27 UA 53-44 ... WHS went scoreless for 4:07 on the clock ... Waverly didn't get points on the board until :51.1 on the game clock - Trey Robertson with a deep trey to make it 47-57 ... Robertson with another 3 pointer with :34.5 on the clock pulled Waverly within 7 points at 50-57 ... the final score was a layup in transition by UA as the clock ran out ... UA 59 Waverly 50 a final ...

... the game overall could be described in one word "intensity" - a high intensity level by both teams ... UA was led by 6-3 senior Quinn Corna who put up 12 points in the opening period ... showing why he is putting up 21ppg - scoring on drives to the rim, on the block and a couple treys ... the only other points for UA in the first were a pair of 2 pointers from Nick Heath (4 pts) ... for the Tigers , they absorbed the Corna attack and stayed toe to toe going 3/3 from beyond the arc with 3 balls from Trey Robertson (2) and Wade Futhey (1) ... Will Futhey added a pair of 2 pointers on dimes from Robertson and deuce from Hudson Kelly ... UA 16 Waverly 15 after 1 ... quarter 2 was a dog fight - high intensity D ... the Tigers holding Corna to a single 2 point bucket ... while holding the rest of UA to 2 fgs in the period - Owen Gawl & Drew Graves with one each to go with FTs from Nick Heath/Geoffrey Schoeny - UA with 8 points in the quarter ... Waverly continued to ride the Trey Robertson train - the senior shooting guard added 7 pts in the qtr. with a pair of drives to the rim and 3/3 shooting from the line ... Braylon Robertson added a 3 pointer and Will Futhey another 2 pointer in the paint ... Waverly 27 UA 24 at the half ... defensively you have to "find the shooters", in the 3rd WHS lost #35 Nick Heath, the 6-3 senior, burned the Tigers for 3 treys outta UA's first 5 fgs in the 3rd period ... UA went 4/6 from behind the arc in the 3rd which closed the gap and gave the Bears the lead after 3 qtr. ... also putting up points for UA - a 3 from Graves/4 pts from Corna/ a 2 pointer & 1 from Schoeny ... Waverly was led by the duo of Robertson & Futhey "the taller" as Trey added 8 pts with a triple included & 3/4 from the FT line, Futhey did a nice job on the boards adding 6 pts down low for the Tigers ... UA 43 Waverly 41 after 3 ... UA won the final period 16-9 ... getting 4 points off their bench Jack Purcell 2 pts/Jacob Schraider 2 pts ... UA got scoring from 6 different players in the 4th - when Waverly had to scramble on D it opened up the floor for UA offensively - where open players finished in the paint at the rim - all 8 UA fgs in the 4th were at the rim ... 3/8 fgs were transition buckets with the final 2 points a transition bucket on a Tiger turnover as the buzzer sounded ... UA 59 Waverly 50 a final ...

... I've had the pleasure to have eyes on all 3 of Waverly's BIG 3 non-conference games in the last couple of weeks ... kudos to Coach Robertson in scheduling these games to begin with - D1 (8-1) Newark, Hurricane WVa and the University of Upper Arlington D1 (9-0) ... the intensity - there's that word again- in the Newark and UA games was "post season" like ... no other team in SEO plays Newark to 55-60 OT loss ( a game that the Tigers led by 7 in the final qtr of regulation) ... no other team in SEO plays UA as described above coming down to empty possessions in the final 4 minutes of the 4th ... a 69-59 win over Hurricane WVA in the Alley ... 1-2 ... I KNOW all of theses games were games that the Tigers learned something about themselves as a TEAM ... Waverly is the best team Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line ...

... Waverly has yet ANOTHER BIG TIME non-conference barometer game in February ... the Tigers play Colonel Crawford HS which currently sits at 8-0 ... saw some video on them - similar in size to the Tigers/ look to have at least 3 perimeter scorers/ great length which translates into excellent perimeter D with that trapping ability out front ... will be ANOTHER great matchup ... they are playing on a neutral court , not sure where though ... the game is on a Sunday, it would be great to have contingent of SEO supporters attend that one !!!
