Gallia Academy 61
Unioto 56 a final

... billed as the rematch of the 2021 D2 District final Gallia Academy vs Unioto where the Tanks of Coach Hoops won that first battle 47-32 @ Piketon HS ... less than a year later the same schools met on a neutral court in the Waverly Downtown Arena ... GAHS brought 4 starters back from last year's district team with 6-8 Isaac Clary leading the way , Kenyon Franklin, Brody Fellure, Carson Call along with the addition of 6-6 swing man Zane Loveday... for Unioto - no starters returned, Desean Branson & Evan Park came off the bench for the U in March with Branson playing a major role in the UHS 15 point win ... 2021-22 regular season - gone are the U's starting 5, enter a soph post player, a freshman pg, with 3 nonstarters from last season's district championship team ... the MO for Gallia Academy is that the offense runs through the big men down low - as well it should! Loveday at 6-6, Clary at 6-8 has to drive the offense side each time down the court as the first option ... in the opening quarter Loveday and Clary imposed their size on the blocks with Clary getting 3 fgs on the blocks ... Loveday added 2 midrange jumpers and stepped out for a 3 pointer to end the quarter ... the bigs got support from Carson Call/Brody Fellure - each getting 2 pointers in the opening period to give the Blue Devils the lead ... for the Tanks 4 of the 5 starters got on the scoreboard as the U went 3/5 from beyond the arc with Blake Hoops (fr)/Ben Spetnagel/Evan Park each with a trey in the opening quarter, and a 2 pointer on a drive to the rim from Desean Branson ... Gallia Academy 17 Unioto 11 after 1 ... period 2 looked more "March 2021 like" as the U put the ball in Branson's hands as the senior guard drove the lane for 6 points ... Unioto only took 1 three pointer in the 2nd (0/1) - opting to going into the paint for their 5 fgs - Gabe Corcoran came off the bench to score 5 points in the paint, Park added a 2 pointer on a putback bucket ... going into the paint drew contact - with the contact Unioto was able to go 4/5 from the FT line ... for GAHS - the Unioto D, held the Devil offense to 3 fgs/ 4 pts from Clary and 2 from Loveday with everyone else spectators for GAHS ... Unioto 27 Gallia Academy 23 at the half ... I had GAHS ranked as one of my Elite 8 teams in my preseason rankings - those rankings were based on what I THOUGHT would be the formula for GAHS success - 2 bigs inside supported on the perimeter and the "get to the rim" abilities of Kenyon Franklin & Brody Fellure ... to this point in the new season the perimeter duo had shown "glimpses" of THAT projection ... in the 3rd quarter vs Unioto we got a look at what the GAHS offense could/SHOULD look like every game ... in the opening 2 periods Franklin & Fellure had 2 points between them while Loveday/Clary had 19 of the GAHS 23 points ... the 3rd period showed us a more complete GAHS TEAM as Clary (6 pts)/Loveday (5pts) were still "A" focus for the U to stop BUT Fellure got to the rim with conviction for 4 points/ Franklin 4 points - the U with both Franklin and Fellure not just looking to be deliverers of the ball to the bigs NOW had to guard on the perimeter to stop the outside shot , the drives to the rim AND the BIGS down low - GAHS put up 19 points vs the U's 14 pts - the GAHS defense turned Unioto over 4 times ... UHS was led by Branson's 6 pts at the rim, 3 pointers from Spetnagel and Park to go with a Hoops 2 pointer ... Gallia Academy 42 Unioto 41 after 3 ... this one was going to go down to the wire ... last season's district final matchup had Branson taking over in the 4th quarter for the U with 9 points while holding GAHS to 2 fgs and 4/8 from the FT line - fast forward to December 30, 2021 - Branson was held to 3 points ... Kenyon Franklin did his best Desean Branson impersonation as the soph guard showed DB quickness in getting to the rim for 7 points, Brody Fellure too LOOKED to score at the rim/ 2 pts and 6/6 from the FT line ... for Unioto Corcoran did a great job off the bench for 6 points , Newton Hoops/Park each hit 3 pointers in the 4th period ... at 5:30 on the clock the U led 47-46 ... exchanges of buckets had the score GAHS 55-53 at 2:22 on the clock ... :37.5 the U trailed 56-57 ... :23 on the clock 57-56 GAHS ... Fellure knocked down 4/4 FTs with the final 2/2 coming with :05.9 on the clock to make the score Gallia Academy 61 Unioto 56 a final ...

The key to the blue devils being as good as they can be is for coach to take the training wheels off of Franklin. He can’t pull him every-time he doesn’t make the right decision. If he can do that Franklin can beat most kids off the dribble that is going bring kids off of clary and outside shooters. Just give him the keys to the car coach.
