Hiland 56
Western Pike 46 a final

... When you get to the Elite 8 - no one "sneaks" into those top 8 spots in the state ... the teams who get to the rarified air of a regional final can "feel it", "taste it" - only 32 minutes from going to The Show ... once the games starts where you stand in punching your golden ticket is right there on the scoreboard - all 32 minutes are played .. time ... score ... showing "exactly where you stand" ... as a fan - with your team taking the lead the mind goes to "what if" "only ___ minutes left" "we can do this" ... for one team the dream comes true for the other ? more What ifs ...

...the Hiland Hawks vs the Western Pike Indians ... Hiland's strength of schedule in D4 was calculated to be #2 while Western Pike #184 ... on this night #184 made #2 wonder - Who are these guys? ... Basketball is a game of runs/spurts to begin with ... in the post season everything is magnified ... the runs seem bigger , the penalty for turnovers seems more harsh ...

... Opening the game, Western put up a 12 spot on the board - Chase Carter opened with a triple and a 2 pointer for 5pts in the opening quarter of action, Noah Whitt added 4 pts and freshman Drew Haggy drained a trey of his own ... for Hiland - Dylan Weaver/Chris Shetler both starters had a bucket each, off the bench 6-6 Alex Yoder added a 2 pointer in the paint ... Sammy Detweiler 2/2 from the line and Caden Miller 1/2 from the free throw line to round out the scoring for HHS ... neither team took care of the ball as the Indians "fumbled" it away 5 times and Hiland not to be outdone had 4 miscues of their own ... Western Pike 12 Hiland 9 after 1 ... the 2nd period wasn't kind to the Pike County Indians - as Coach Williams' boys continued to struggle with the physicality of Hiland, turning the ball over 6 more times (11 TOs in the opening 16 minutes ... WHS could only add 3 fgs in the 2nd , a 3 ball from Kam Jones off the bench and pair of 2 pointers from Reed Brewster and Whitt ... a 7 point quarter won't keep you connected with the opposition, especially a team as good as Hiland ... the Hawks continued to get into the paint adding 7 buckets on the blocks out of 8 fgs in the 2nd ... Chris Shetler led the way in the 2nd with 6 points in the paint/ Alex Yoder with 4 more points off the bench - the Hawks got 10 points in the first half from the 6,7,8 spots in the lineup Phin Killy with 2 pts filling in for injured Dylan Weaver who left the game with 5:20 to play in the qtr. - didn't hurt the Hawks at either end of the floor... Grant Miller dropped a trey (3pts) and starter Tony Yoder added a 2 pointer ... all 8 players who played in the opening half, dented the scoring column for the Hawks of Coach Schlabach ... Hiland 26 Western Pike 19 at the half ... a few key napkin stats for the opening half ... Hiland 20 points in the paint vs Western with 10 pts ... TOs - Hiland 7 turnovers vs Western Pike with 11 ... coming out the locker rooms at the half - HHS continued to keep separation, were able to keep Western at arms length ,maintaining a 3-4 possession advantage for most of the period ... Sammy Detweiler (7 points vs Newark Catholic in the semifinal) was held in check with 2 FTs through 2 qtrs ... in the 3rd Detweiler added a triple + a 2 pointer and 1/2 from the line (6pts) ... Tony Yoder added a pair of buckets (4 pts) to go with 2 pointer from Caden Miller/Chris Shetler ... one thing we have grown to expect from the Indians of Coach Williams is that there is NO quit ... at 2:02 in the period Hiland held a 2 possession advantage at 40-34 ... coming out the timeout WHS turned up the D, with the increased tempo Hiland turned the ball over, the Indians had cut into the lead with 3 balls (3/3 in the period) 1 each from Brewster/Whitt and Carter ... the Indians with the turned up tempo looked to find a rhythm at both ends of the floor ... Carter put up 7 pts in the period , Whitt 5pts, Kolten Miller his only 4 points of the game, freshman Drew Haggy with 3/4 from the FT line ... Big Mo had gone to the Western Pike side of the court as the Indians not only got back into the game, the Indians had taken the lead with the 22-14 3rd qtr scoring advantage ... Western Pike 41 Hiland 40 after 3 ... we had a game! visions of a trip to the Dayton University Arena, 8 minutes to go - keep doing what we're doing on the Western Pike side, have to stop the bleeding on the Hiland side ... maybe the experience vs D2, D3 schools paid off for Hiland as the Hawks absorbed the Indian run in the 3rd and opened the 4th with an 8-0 run of their own to take a 48-41 advantage with 5:17 to play ... a Chase Carter 2 pointer and a pair of FTs brought the Indians to 45-48 deficit with 3:43 on the clark ... only 1 two point fg by Hiland made the score 50-45 with 1:29 to play set up a pivotal point in the game - Western turned the Hawks over 4 times in the next 1 minute and change only come away empty handed by turning the ball over 5 times on their own ball ... the overhead scoreboard showed Hiland 52-46 with :43 on the clock ... 53-46 with :36.8 to play ... the Hawks final 6 points were at the FT line ... a 15-6 Hiland advantage on the scoreboard in the 4th with 8 points coming the Ft line (8/13 in the 4th) ... TO's after forcing TOs - daggers , empty possessions ... not going to get it done at the regional final level ... Hiland 56 Western Pike 46 a final

Props to Western Pike, we have never played a team all year that would full court press us most of the game,it really got us out of sink for most of the game, there on the ball pressure was also very good, usually that's what we do to other teams, I really thought if we could make it back to the regionals this season,we could be facing Trimble,a team that returned most of there starters from last season, props to Western Pike again for beating some very good teams in there tournament run to regional finals, the Hawks could be pretty decent next season with the return of Detweiler and 6'7" Alex Yoder our reserve team had a strong year going 16-4,our 7th and 8th grade teams both great season and we looking forward to when they get to highschool, coach Schlabach youngest son is on the 7th grade team he is going to be a good one.and props to Western Pike again for a great season, good luck next season
