Gilmour Academy 58 Waverly 43 a D2 Semi - Final

Post by pfloyd »

Gilmour Academy 58
Waverly 43 ... final

... All things must come to an end - rides, school years, regular seasons, post seasons ... high school basketball careers ... Friday night at the University of Dayton Arena one of the best high school basketball seasons in SEO high school basketball was over - the ride that ALL of us Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line were on was over ... but the memories of a group of youngsters who performed better than any other team in SEOhio in 2021-22 will remain with us for a long time to come ... the Waverly Tigers(23-4) entered the game vs Gilmour Academy (22-5) ... Waverly being the decided underdogs simply by the fact that the Tigers were coming in as winners of the SE District in D2 - teams from SEOhio are viewed as but a bump in the road for opponents to get to the NEXT stop in the post season ... as this one tipped off it looked like those who look down on SEOhio hoops might be right as the Lancers jumped out to a 13-2 advantage in the first 4:26 of the game led by the 6-3 jr. Brandon Rose with a triple & a 2 pointer (5pts) ... the three pointer in hindsight was a prelude of THE key napkin stat in the game (3 pointers) ... GA went 2/7 from beyond the arc in the first period of action ... Nathan Flaherty added a trey (3pts) with 2 pointers coming from 6-7 Ryan Mueller (16ppg) and Adisa Molton II (3pts) ... Waverly took the lid of the basket with a 2 pointer from the heart & soul of the Tigers - Trey Robertson ... followed by Robertson "the younger", Braylon, going 1/2 from the FT line ... the quarter ended with the Tigers doing what the Tigers have done all season riding the scoring of Trey Robertson - Robertson (8pts) dropped a pair three pointers to keep Waverly within shouting distance ... Gilmour Academy 13 Waverly 9 after 1 ... after Waverly fell behind 2-13 the murmurs were heard "SEOhio basketball, who did they beat to get into the final four?" ... if anyone has followed the Tigers , and this particular group of Tigers, they have always been described as a "gritty, no quit, fight for each other" type of TEAM ... from the 3:34 mark on the clock in the 1st period to 3:45 on the clock in the 2nd qtr. the Tigers looked to morph into "themselves"- defense, defense more defense ... finding each other offensively, hitting the 3 ball ... with Trey's 2 three balls to end the 1st period it carried over into the 2nd... Robertson's 3's seemed to relax the Tiger TEAM as Waverly went on an 18-7 run ... in the 2nd 6-5 Will Futhey added a pair of 2 pointers on a shot in the paint plus a putback bucket (4pts) ... Trey Robertson added a 2 pointer , Mark Stulley took the ball to the rim for 2 pts ...Braylon Robertson drilled a three pointer... at 3:45 in the 2nd the Tigers had knotted the score at 20-20 ... great run , showing all of the weapons the Tigers had in the arsenal - penetration to the rim, offensive boards, shutdown D ... but as is the case when you get to this level of play - final four- your opponent is ALWAYS a team that is well coached, has PLAYERS, is a team that has absorbed runs AND has the personnel to answer the runs ... Gilmour after the Waverly run to forge the 20-20 tie went yard ... the Lancers got separation yet again riding the perimeter shooting of a pair of juniors Brandon Rose - 2 triples (2/4 from the FT line) 8pts in the qtr/ Adisa Molton II a pair of 3 pointers on his own ball (6pts) ... GA had 5 fgs in the period ALL were of the 3 point variety as Flaherty knocked down his 2nd triple of the game ... the Lancers went 5/7 from beyond the arc in the 2nd ... 7/14 for the opening half ... separation ... Gilmour Academy 30 Waverly 20 at the half ... when teams are on the short end of the scoreboard totals the opening 2-3 minutes coming out the locker room after half time IS important ... turning up the D has been a trait of the Waverly Tigers all year, being able to turnover the opponent - get points out of transition ... in the first half Waverly was only able to turn the Lancers over 3 times (one on a player control foul the opening offensive drive of the game for GA) ... nothing out of the transition game ... the 3rd period saw empty trips for the Tigers while being able to hold the Lancers to not much on their own offensive end ... on the positive side the Tigers HAD looks! - some nice looks into the paint that were THERE - but either a hand on the ball by the defense of the Lancers or a bobble - a bobble that gave GA an opportunity in that split second to recover ... if anything GA was athletic in the paint/ didn't go for the Tiger ball fakes/stayed for the most part on the floor ... size does matter in the paint defensively 6-7 sr Ryan Mueller and 6-3 Rose altered shots, forced inside shots to be off the mark even if they weren't blocked (4 blocks on the game) ... the 3rd period was played to a virtual draw as Waverly got the W for the qtr 12-11 ... Trey Robertson added 5 pts with a triple and 2pter, Wade Futhey a 3 pointer that bounced around the rim before falling in, Hudson Kelly a putback bucket along with Will Futhey 2 points off of an offensive board ... for Gilmour Rose and Molton were the offense ... the duo netted 10 of the Lancer 11 points in the period ... both dropping 3 balls (Rose 6 pts/ Molton 4pts) ... GA was 3/6 from the line in the 3rd ... through 3 qtrs GA was 6/11 FTs while the Tigers of Coach Robertson had only been to the charity stripe for 4 attempts hitting 1/4 ... Gilmour Academy 41 Waverly 32 after 3 ... playing solid defense has it's perks - forcing turnovers which leads to transition points (at least when you can turnover the opposition) ... tenacious defense in the final quarter vs a team that has solid guard play, size to go to on the perimeter, when you CAN'T turnover the offense it leads to precious time being worked off the clock ... Gilmour Academy IS that team - the Lancers had but 1 turnover in the final 16 minutes of action ... after the Lancer big man Mueller (6-7) stepped out for an uncontested triple (3pts) ... the fourth period turned into the Tigers putting up 3 balls that didn't find their mark (0-6 in the 4th) ... Trey Robertson hitting a midrange jumper 2pts & 2/2 from the FT line ... Hudson Kelly with a putback (2pts0 before fouling out with 2:12 on the clock, Will Futhey , the big man in the middle for WHS, appropriately grabbed an offensive board & putback for his final 2 points in the paint as a Tiger ... Penn Morrison adding 2 points in the paint to round out the Tiger scoring ... Gilmour matched the scoring from the Tigers with a 2pointer from Dorjan Flowers (3pts)/ Rose finished with a 2 pointer (23 points to lead the Lancers) ... Lucas Glover with 2 points off the bench ... the rest of the Gilmour scoring came from the free throw line ... GAHS going 8/13 from the line to stretch out the final score ... Gilmour Academy 58 Waverly 43 a final ...

... as a follower of high school basketball in Southeastern/Southern Ohio you live to get teams from Below the Lancaster-Dixon Line to The Show - The Final Four ... last year the New Boston Tigers made it in D4 but WE couldn't celebrate due to it being The Covid Season ... this season the Waverly Tigers made it in D2, WE could ALL celebrate ,WE could BE in attendance ... being to the Show IS a BIG A$$ DEAL !!! what Waverly DID in 2021-22 IS A BIG A$$ DEAL !!! ... congratulations to the Waverly Tiger Nation - as when a TEAM goes to the SHOW - it is truly a TEAM effort with TEAM defined as coaches, players, cheerleaders, the entire school community, the fans of TEAM, town ...WE saw it last night as the ENTIRE town of Waverly, Ohio was present ... I was sitting on press row, one of the reporters said he had seen 11 games in the past week and the Waverly fandom was the BEST he had witnessed of the lot - well done Tiger Nation ...

... What a season! 23-5 ... with ONLY 1 loss to a team in the SE district ... played a schedule 2nd to none in preparation for being "IN the moments" they were in IN the post season ... SOC championship, Sectional Championship, District Championship, Regional Championship -THE "ship" that was on the Waverly Radar from the beginning of the season until the TEAM made it happen ... as a fan of high school hoops, getting to know the folks from the hoops communities that I report on - it's what I do ... great people/fans in Waverly !!! - these folks have been preparing for, planning for, expecting yesterdays appearance in the Final Four since this group of 'kids" were playing biddy basketball together !!! this has been a road that started in grade school and ended last night ... I've seen the pics/videos on FaceBook of this group on the courts from small gyms to AAU tournaments ... this was no accident ... everyone of these "kids" have been in playoff atmosphere situations (football, baseball, basketball etc) ... last night just doesn't happen especially in small town , Southern Ohio ... small town Southern Ohio, Waverly Ohio had watched this group of players prepare for their moment for years ... their own expectations came to fruition this season - dreams ... they do come true ... sometimes all you need is THAT guy who organizes those dreams - Coach Robertson & his staff - they were, have been THE guys ... 52 years ago was the last time Waverly had been to the Show ... I saw the ball boys on the floor shooting before the game last night, the young kids in the stands yelling for the Tigers, parents of those youngin's thinking about their own kids being AT THE SHOW down the road ... hard work ... time ... sacrifice ... that's what this year's Final Four Tigers collectively endured to get to last night ... thank you ALL for representing! - representing yourselves, your families, your school, your fans of SEOhio in the manner you did - as winners ...

GA won the "beyond" the 3 point line phase 30 pts to 15 pts for WHS ... final score GA 58 WHS 43 ... difference +15 for Gilmour Academy ...

Thank you for such a beautiful well thought out piece! Unbelievable support from all of our communities! I know we get into simple local rivalries but after last night it will be hard for me to have any kinds of animosity or dislike towards any public school in our area. We need to build each other up.

The lessons learned in pursuing a championship are more valuable than the championship itself. Glory is fleeting, positive character traits are not.

That and thank you @pfloyd for being a wonderful ambassasor for high school basketball within the SEOP footprint. From the elite eight to the end table, your reporting is always positive and uplifting. May you continue in good health.

... Tiger Nation showed up in force to support the Waverly basketball team, the coaching staff and all of the hard work that was put into just getting to the Final Four ... these "kids" were heartbroken last night after the game BUT when they think about the road they took, the work they put into getting there, the teams they played and beat - they have left a legacy for the youngsters of Waverly to shoot for - to get back to the Show, to put in the work in the off season to be able to wear and represent the Tiger orange & black - to do the 2021-22 TEAM justice through their own representation on the hardwood ... those youngsters who were getting to shoot last night prior to the game - THEY will be special when it is THIER turn to wear the Tiger uniform at the varsity level - mark it down LOL ...
