Alexander 58
Vinton County 54 a final

Alexander entered the game coming off of a 40-64 loss to Jackson ... Vinton County as well coming off a road loss to Federal Hocking 60-72 ... Coach Skinner's Spartans play with a short bench to begin with this season entered tonight's contest without PG Jagger Cain due to injury ... Vinton County for the 2nd straight game with the numbers advantage - Coach Kight can go comfortably 8 deep in his rotation ... Vinton County had already beaten Sparty 51-48 in McArthur back in week #2 of the season ... not like this matchup needed anymore story lines BUT AHS's Kyler D'Augustino entered the game just 25 points away from becoming the all time leading scorer in TVC basketball history ... ANNNNNND the Vinton County Vikings had "tickets on the Red Eye" to take them to the Hoosier Gym in Knightstown Indiana to take on the Oak Hill Oaks to make memories for a lifetime! ... story lines everywhere you turned at the Alley Friday night - and THAT was BEFORE the game tipped off ...

... Coach Skinner's Spartans opened in a zone D ... while Coach Kight's Vikings opened with sr. Brayden Cain burying back to back 3's , 6-5 jr Ashton Allman with 1/2 from the FT line pushed VC to a 7-0 lead before Alexander dented the scoreboard - Kyler D'Augustino knocking down a medium range jumper, a pair of putbacks by 6-7 big man in the middle Zach Barnhouse (4pts) the rest of the scoring was all Kyler D' (9 pts in the qtr) ... the plan of attack - control the tempo, get the ball in Kyler D'Augustino's hands, keep the ball in Kyler D'Augustino's hands ... play solid D on the other end of the floor to keep the ball on the perimeter/limit drives into the paint/ keep the ball off the blocks ... Cain hit his 3rd triple of the quarter (9pts) ... a pair of 2 pointers from Cobra Sharp & Owen Hire off the bench ... Vinton County 14 Alexander 13 after 1 ... Quarter number 2 started as tight as the opening quarter ended - Barnhouse for the Spartans picked up a 2 pointer in the paint, Owen Hire with a putback for VC ... at the 5:55 Alexander led 18-17 ... with a solid dose of KD with a triple to start a 7-0 Spartan run aided by multiple VC turnovers (4 in the qtr) & D'Augustino's ability set the tempo offensively - take his time walking the ball up court, dribble in the backcourt waiting for VC defender(s) to guard him - if not - shorten the game holding the ball - 20 to 25 second possessions - VC double-team ... KD beating the double team for option 1 - a 3 point jumper , option 2 get to the FT line for midrange jumper, option 3 get into the paint for the KD lefthanded floater, option 4 get to the rim , option 5 get into no mans land and force contact/ go to the FT line - ALL options equaled points ... at 4:14 on the clock Alexander 24 VC 17 ... the final 4:14 on the clock was all Vikings - holding AHS scoreless/ jr. Garrett Brown with a 3 ball, Brayden Cobra to the rim with a drive , a Spartan turnover with under 10 seconds to play - Owen Hire with the transition bucket at the rim ... Alexander 24 Vinton County 24 at the half ... Coach Skinner is/always has been an excellent coach when his teams are able to control the tempo of the game - last night Alexander was in full control of the clock, the ball, any up and down the court was done by Alexander in the half court - Vinton County was held to 1 transition bucket at the end of the 2nd period for the game ... out of the 32 minutes on the game clock VC was able to change the tempo of the game for 2 minutes and 31 seconds - it was ALMOST enough ... after watching the opening half of action every patron in the Alley KNEW what to expect in the last 16 minutes - D'Augustino , D'Augustino and more D'Augustino ... K D' had 9 points in each of the opening 2 quarters ... the script said "more of the same" - Alexander scored 13 points in the 3rd, Kyler D' with 8pts ... Barnhouse cleaned up on a KD miss (2pts) and Klaxton Hawk forced into the start with the loss of Jagger Cain added 2 pts in the paint as the Spartans "broke open" the game taking a 4 point lead ... for Vinton County - Jack Davidson hit a 3 ball, Brown with a pair of FTs (2pts) and Allman a couple of buckets in the paint before taking the bench in foul trouble ... Coach Skinner did what he wanted in the 3rd - kept the Vikings searching for points with solid D, controlled the tempo - didn't allow the Vikings to "force" the tempo by turning the Spartans over ( Alex with only 2 turnovers in the period) and with K D' consistently getting where ever he wanted on the court and putting up points the Spartan offense was able to open a lead going into the final 8 minutes ... Alexander 37 Vinton County 33 after three ... having the lead entering the 4th, Kyler D'Ausgustino with the ball in his hands for 95% of the time for 94 ft and all 50 ft side to side, VC unable to force an up tempo game at any time in the opening 3 qtrs - the FanDuel betting line was all on Alexander ... the 4th quarter saw Alexander stretch the lead to 6 points with 6:08 on the clock 43-37 AHS ... with K D' in firm control of the clock ... Alexander led 47-42 with 4:02 on the game clock ... trading buckets was not good enough, Alexander pushed the lead to 7 at 53-46 with 2:31 left in the 4th ... what had been missing for the first 29 minutes 30 seconds of the game - the ability to turn up the pressure, force the ball into the hands of the other 4 AHS players where THEY had to make a decision within the 5 secs they had the ball with pressure all around them - turnovers- 5 in the 4th period/ 3 in the final 1:53 ... at 1:53 the lead was cut to 4 Spartans 55-51 ... fouls took a toll - for both sides - Allman for VC/ Hawk for AHS both fouled out - Allman in the final minute of the game ... VC was getting to the line (Hire 5/6 FTs in the 4th) scoring with the clock stopped ... D'Augustino 6/6 from the FT in the 4th ... 1:13 55-53 Alexander ... with 20 seconds on the clock, an Alexander turnover ... Alexander leading 55-54 ... VC with the ball for a shot inside 10 ft ... Barnhouse with a BIG TIME "got a piece of the shot" to have it come up short with 15 sec to play ... foul on the scramble for the rebound ... D'Augustino 2/2 from the FT line at 13.5 on the clock, Barnhouse 1/2 from from the line ... scoring in the quarter for Vinton County - Brayden Cain 2 of his 5 treys for the game (8pts)/ Owen Hire 7 pts/2 points each for Jack Davidson/Cobra Sharp/Ashton Allman ... for Alex - Kyler D'Augustino 14pts/ Alex Norris 2/Zach Barnhouse 3pts/ Klaxotn Hawk 2/2 from the line ... Alexander 58 Vinton County 54 a final

... Alexander the TEAM executed the perfect script right up to the point when it ALL "almost" came crumbling down in the final 2+ minutes ... 3 straight turnovers allowed VC to turn up the tempo which turned up the Alex decision making - when that is being done by anyone not named D'Augustino it can be a very scary scenario BUT as the basketball gods would have it - a shot to put VC UP with 18 seconds to play was deflected - a great block by Barnhouse/straight up/full extension getting just enough of the ball that it never made to the rim ... I've seen a whole bunch of outstanding players this season from Caleb Lovely at South Point, Myles Montgomery at Minford, Copas at North Adams to name but a few - all outstanding BUT none have the responsibility of BEING the TEAM's offense , every game, 32 minutes ... with EVERY person on the floor, in the stands KNOWING it ... Kyler D'Augustino is the best offensive player in SEO - smooth, hard handles to keep possession, changing of gears, setting up his shots with his dribble/speed/change of direction ... I was smiling the entire game last night - admiring what this young man can do with a basketball and yet STILL play within TEAM ... props to the rest of Alexander's TEAM as well - outstanding defensive game by ALL - Dylan Allison/Alex Norris/Zach Barnhouse/Klaxton Hawk/off the bench Mason Morris at 5' and a few inches grabbed a BIG backside board during the VC run in the 4th, was placed in the middle of the VC 3/4 court pressure in 4th ... he learned a whole lot about varsity basketball under pressure last night - he survived it, learned from it and WILL BE better from it - well done Mason Morris ...

... great atmosphere in the Alley last night ! - got to do my thing sitting next to the Voice of High School Basketball - Lou Horvath ... thanks to all of the Alexander folks for making pfloyd feel at home in the Alley! talking hoops - past and present ... 93bulldog doing the radio broadcast - Mr. TVC sports - all sports not just basketball, both boys and girls !!! I don't know how he does it but he does and better than anyone ...

Kyler is unreal. Great rundown for how important he is for the Spartans.

Did you get a feel at the end of the game we were kinda watching Hoosiers, Floyd? Kid fouls out, Alexander has to play Morris, who is only about 5'3. It's a pressure situation, intense D by VC and the poor kid has back-to-back turnovers just like Ollie. But, Sparty has Jimmy Chitwood scoring 40 pts and squeaks out the win. Lol

Unbelievable! First we lose to the spot lighters and now we get beat by their country cousins. Coach Combs would have never stood for this. Pass me a beer. I need some sleep.

VC has lost 3 of the last 5. Wins over Greenfield McClain and Oak Hill. Losses to Wellston, Federal Hocking and Alexander. (All on the road) Definitely have hit a snag in the season after the hot start but I bet the Vikings will turn things around. Big game Friday night in McArthur against co TVC leaders, Nelsonville York.

... Yep !!! real life "Hoosiers" situation ... fun game to watch, as I said I was in awe of Kyler D's ability to do what he does when EVERYONE in the gym KNOWS what he is going to do (the ball going to be in his hands) ...
