Fairfield Leesburg 54
North Adams 37 a final

... 2 top SHAC "TEAMS" , one sporting a 15-0 unblemished record - Fairfield Leesburg, the "challenger" - North Adams 13-3 ... both teams have head coaches who were outstanding pg's as players - Fairfield led by Coach Quentin Williams / North Adams Coach Nathan Copas ... North Adams entered the game at full strength - including one of the best PG in SEO while the Lions for Fairfield were down arguably the POY in the SHAC this season/ down 20+ppg ... on this HOF induction night - all "eyes on" in the packed house at Fairfield Leesburg High School were ready for a what "on paper" was a can't miss great matchup ... FHS having won the first game on the road at NA 48-43 ... the Green Devils looked to return the favor ...

... What should have been a tight game, between 2 good teams turned out to be an outstanding game by the better of 2 good TEAMS - Fairfield Leesburg ... FHS trailed at 0-2 and 2-4 but were never headed the rest of the game ... the theme for the entire game - outstanding TEAM defense by Fairfield Leesburg ... the missing of 20+ppg had to be accounted for, especially vs a "North Adams" type ball club ... DEFENSE ... the Lions held NA's Bransyn Copas to without a fg for 3 quarters ... held the NA team to 1 fg in the opening quarter - a transition bucket by Carson Osborne ... 4/4 FTs was all the Devils could muster in the 1st ...on the FHS end of the court TJ Mootz accounted for 8 points in the 1st including the lone triple in the quarter (FHS 1/6 ... NA 0/3) ... bookending Mootz's 8 pts were 2 pointers from Larkin Friend/Gabe Fouch ... Fairfield Leesburg 12 North Adams 6 after 1 ... Defense travels even if that defense is on the home court - the BIG takeaway from the opening half (and the whole 32 minutes of game time) Fairfield controlled the boards - both ends of the floor - but in particular on the defensive end of the floor - the Green Devils lived the "one and done" phrase - whatever NA put up , the Lions pulled off the boards ... with NA only hitting 4 fgs in the first 2 qtrs - lots of missed shots/lots of FHS defensive boards ... NA hit a pair of 3 pointers in the 2nd 1 each by Jayce Rothwell/Breestin Schweickart off the bench ... Rothwell picked up a deuce with the only Devil putback bucket of the game ... for FHS pg Larkin Friend added 5 pts/ one of FHS' 3 triples in the period - the other 2 coming from the Lions' bench Trey House(5pts) and Cade Miller (3pts) ... Fairfield Leesburg 27 North Adams 14 at the half ... on my napkin stat sheet I wrote down "patient" on the FHS side of the sheet - offensively the Lions' offense was patient/deliberate in getting the shots they wanted from where they wanted on the court - no wasted dribbles/great movement of the ball via the pass - all but for 2 minutes of the 2nd quarter when the FHS offense fell in love with the quick 3 ball (0-5 in the 2 minute span ... 3/9 in the qtr) ... when the 3rd quarter opened Coach Williams had reigned in the offense again/ the patient, deliberate offense that staked the Lion's a double digit halftime lead had returned ... the tight defense with good rotation in the paint, the owning of the boards continued, keeping the engine that makes NA run under control - continued as Copas went scoreless for the 2nd straight period (2 pts through 3 qtrs - no fgs) ... scoring for NA was led by Carson Osborne 5pts/including a trey ... Kamden Buttelwerth adding a 2 pointer and Rothwell with 2 pts ... Fairfield kept the Devils at arms length hitting 3/5 from behind the arc (Gabe Fouch hitting back to back triples) and Cade Miller off the bench for a 3 pointer ... Gunner Bennington saddled with foul trouble most of the game added a 2 pointer in the paint/ Mootz 2/2 from the line to wrap-up the FHS scoring ... Fairfield Leesburg 40 North Adams 24 end of 3 ... NA couldn't get enough offense or enough stops to make a dent in the FHS lead ... at 4:41 the score stood at 46-35 FHS ... Copas picked up 2 fgs - 2pts on a drive to the rim/a 3 pointer and an uncharacteristic 1/4 from the FT line ... Rothwell/Buttelwerth/Schweickart 2 points each with Rothwell adding 1/1 from the line ... in the end the Fairfield defense got the W - holding the NA offense to only one player to hit double figures (Rothwell 10pts) holding Copas to 8 pts ...the 4th quarter scoring for the Lions was led by TJ Mootz going 5/5 from the FT Line (7 pts) / 4 points from Wyatt Collins at the rim - benefiting from the NA double teams/trapping on the perimeter / Trey House added 3 pts in the 4th ... Fairfield Leesburg 54 North Adams 37 a final ...

... first time "eyes on" the Fairfield TEAM ... unless you are in fact a TEAM you don't absorb the loss of 20+ppg , the Lion's are a well coached/well prepared TEAM ... played 7 instead of the usual 8 deep rotation ... I had seen FHS on livestream over the season - excellent with Cannon in the lineup ... still a quality TEAM with the team that Coach Williams puts on the floor - great passing/ TEAM defense/crashing the boards ... offensive patience ... obviously a win over a North Adams team takes away the questions marks ... the Lions average 59/60 ppg entering the game last night - 54 points / holding the opposition to well under the "50 ppg" barometer for high school defenses - FHS is still a post season threat ... best of luck to the Lions the rest of the way ...
