Jeff Lisath Is The Portsmouth Trojans Coach
Jeff Lisath has accepted the boys basketball head coaching job at Portsmouth HS. All that is left is for the PCSD school board to approve his acceptance, which will take place on Thursday, April 20th at the regular board meeting at PHS.
Jeff has had an outstanding career as a player and coach. A 1978 graduate of PHS, Jeff started on the 1978 Class AA State Champion Trojans and was the leading scorer for PHS in that Final 4, scoring a total of 40 points, 22 in the State Championship game vs. Cleveland Cathedral Latin. Those 40 points scored is still the record for most points in the Final 4 by any Trojan. He scored 1,256 points for his career, which is the 6th highest total in PHS history. He played college basketball at Miami of Ohio. The Lisath name has been prominent in Trojan athletics. Daryl, Darnell, Isaiah, and Josh all played various sports at PHS.
He has also had a prolific career as a coach. He previously had stints at Columbus State, Chillicothe girls, and boys HC at Unioto, Piketon, and Dayton Northridge. As HC, He led Piketon to the Final 4 in 2009 in D3. He was an assistant coach on the Portsmouth Trojans 1988 D2 State Championship team. He has around 300 wins total on his coaching resume.
Jeff is married to wife Debbie and they have several children.
His name has already had the Portsmouth community buzzing about him coming home to lead his alma mater. There are already plans to have a "Meet the Team" night, which should take place soon. Fans and alumni who have followed Jeff's career since his playing days at PHS know that having Jeff as head coach of the Trojans is a home run hire. His work ethic as a player was legend in Portsmouth, and he has a proven track record as a coach that will be a great fit for Portsmouth basketball.
Many thanks to the PCSD administration for making this a reality. Welcome home, Jeff........Trojan Nation is looking forward to seeing you on the sidelines leading the Red and Blue.

Bozo: I believe he is retired from the correctional system and currently is the assistant Superintendent of the Dayton Northridge schools.

This is a great hire, especially after losing a coach like Coach Collins and what he done with this program when it was at a low point, I'm sure Jeff has a game plan and I'm excited to watch it unfold and see where it goes.
Go Trojans!!

Re: Jeff Lisath Set to Be Next Portsmouth Trojans Head Coach
Jeff becomes the 24th HC of the Portsmouth Trojans since 1916. Of the previous 23, 8 have taken Trojan teams to the State Tournament, with 4 of those 8 winning state titles. A remarkable stat is that all coaches who have ever coached at Portsmouth have accounted for 40 state appearances and 15 state championships. 2 coaches, Eugene Collins and Red Hopkins are the only ones who led PHS to back to back state tournaments, with Collins doing it in a Final 4 format.
Jeff is a rare individual in Ohio high school basketball history, being one of the few to win a state championship as a player and coaching another team to the Final 4 (Piketon).

BigBlueNation: You are absolutely 100% correct, and I can say without a doubt that there's a whole bunch of people who feel the way we do. There's no doubt in my mind that with time Jeff will resurrect this program. Eugene Collins did it 15 years ago when the program was almost given a death sentence with 7 straight losing seasons from 2003-2009. Just 2 years later in 2011 and 2012 Collins took the Trojans to back to back Final 4's.

Awesome news !!! it's an understatement to say that this is a great hire ... it was a no brainer - a coach with the pedigree of Coach Lisath as both a player and coach ... as a fan of high school hoops in SEOhio it will be great to have the caliber of coach that Coach Lisath IS back in SEOhio ... looking forward to seeing Coach Lisath courtside again!!! Welcome home Coach Lisath!

Wow, Portsmouth Trojans ,just like that will be revelant big time! believe it or not I was at the 1978 State Championship game at St Johns. Coach Hopkins and there leader Jeff Lisath took it to Colin Irish ,I believe name is correct, of the highly touted Cleveland team. Portsmouth should be thankful and the sky’s the limit now. I look for Portsmouth within 2-3 years to be right there again making the Convo ther home again. With this hire , boys and girls will be a name to watch in coming years. Portsmouth will regain that magic of full court pressure and team play. congrats to Coach Lisath and Congrats to Portsmouth Adminstration for making this happen. I’ll be following and probably watching the Trojans .

That is a good question. I'm sure Coach Lisath has some good connections and will get a good staff around him that will get the program back.
