Unioto 63
Circleville 49 a final

...The Roundtown boys came down Rte 23 to take on the U on a rare Thursday night matchup between the MSL vs SVC ... entering the game Circleville was 5-0 on the non-conference side of their pocket schedules ... the Shermans on a 3 game win streak in the 2024 portion of the schedule ... all the talking points lined-up for a great contest between the 7-5 Tigers vs the 7-5 Shermans ... to ADD a little spice to this one, Coach Matt Hoops was going after win #250 at the U ...

... the opening tip was the tip that WASN'T as the U was whistled for a technical for being caught dunking in pregame warmups ... Coach Carpenter's Tigers took a 2-0 lead with Briley Cramer going 2/2 from the charity stripe which ended up the theme for at least the opening half of play as CH went 9/9 from the line in the 1st and 3/3 in the 2nd qtr for 12/12 from the line scoring thru 2 qtrs ... looking a little deeper ... the Tigers for the game ended up taking and making more FTs than they had in fgs made for the game (15 fgs made in the game 17/19 from the line) ... the 2-0 lead was one that Circleville would not relinquish until the 3rd quarter ... CHS was led by Briley Cramer's 7 points in the opening period including a 3 pointer, 6-5 soph Ed Kirk chipped in 6 with a transition 2 pter and 4/4 from the line ... 6-5 senior center Slater Search 2 points on the block to go with sr. shooting guard Preston Hulse's 3/3 from the FT line after getting fouled on a deep missed corner trey attempt ... for the home standing Tanks, 3 players contributed in the scoring column Zeke Schobelock was able to ride his scouting report rep - "don't leave #0 open to shoot the 3 ball!" - as defenders closed out, the sharp shooting senior was able get to the rim off the dribble for 2 buckets AND in keeping his scouting report line going ZS drained a trey (7pts) ... junior Blake Hoops did exactly what the scouting reports said - "goes left, will muscle his way to the rim" - he did - 3 drives finishing at the rim for 6pts ... the final fg for the U was soph PG Blake Fitch pulling up for his patented midrange jumper at the elbow (2pts) ... Circleville 18 Unioto 15 after 1 ...
Quarter number 2 was as even as it gets as BOTH teams knocked down a trey , Schobelock for the U and Hulse for Rd'town ... each team had their "scorer" hit a couple of 2 pters - Schobelock for the Shermans and Cramer for the Tigers ... Schobelock 7 pts/14 for the half ...Cramer 5 pts/12 for the half ... the final points in the quarter had Fitch(UHS) with a midrange jumper & 3/4 from the line ... for Circleville, Slater Search 2/2 from the FT line and off the bench Riley Jenkins with 2 pts ... through the opening 2 qtrs the Unioto scoring was split between 3 players -Schobelock 14/Fitch 7/B. Hoops 6 - nothing off the bench ... Circleville got scoring from 3 starters as well Cramer 12/Kirk 6/Search 4 with bench contributions from Hulse 3pts/Jenkins 2pts ... thru 2 qtrs : the U with 11fgs / 2 for 4 from 3 point land/ 3 for 6 from the line ... C'ville 8 fgs/ 2 for 9 from behind the arc / 12/12 from the FT line ... Circleville maintained their 3 point advantage thru the 2nd ... Circleville 30 Unioto 27 at intermission ... through the bigger part of the regular season the Shermans have struggled to get consistent scoring from anyone not named Zeke Schobelock ... through most of the season the U has struggled on the boards , allowing the opposition to get multiple shots on goal THAT continued last night vs Circleville as Search & Kirk out-hustled the U on the offensive boards with the issue for the Tigers being unable to turn the offensive boards into fgs/points as CHS was only able to convert offensive boards into fgs 3 times/6 points for the game ... on the U's offensive end the Sherman's had 0 putback buckets off of offensive boards ... What do you do when the starters aren't getting it done on the boards? one- find a guy who will crash the boards - enter Ashton Crace off the Tanks bench - in the 2nd half Crace pulled down 9 rbs ... if you are struggling to get offensive boards - don't miss shots ! enter Blake Hoops to open the 3rd quarter, the junior scored 11 points in the period without a miss... opening the period with a drive for 2 , a steal and transition 2 pter at the rim, a Fitch jumper from the FT line forced a CHS timeout as the U took the lead 33-30 with 6:55 on the clock coming out of the locker rooms ... In the 3rd, Hoops playing one of his best offensive games of the season - unforced getting the rim, going both left and right into the paint AND giving the U another perimeter offensive threat as B Hoops drained a trey in the 3rd ... Hoops' 11 points and Fitch with 4 ... 15 pts ... Circleville responded with 11 pts - Slater Search 6pts/Cramer 3/Jack Kline 2 ... the momentum had gone to the home side ... the U were now getting boards with Crace/2 scorers not name Zeke Schobelock stepped up in Hoops & Fitch / the Unioto D turned CHS over 4 times in the qtr while the U took care of the rock - only 4 turnovers thru 3 ... Unioto 42 Circleville 41 after 3 ... on the road, at the U, the Shermans playing D AND getting scoring from 3 offensive weapons - Schobelock/Blake Hoops/Fitch ... the dagger in the 4th was back to back 3 pointers from Zeke Schobelock - the second on a 1/2 court find by Fitch to Schobelock in the corner for 3 to force a CHS timeout 52-43 Unioto 3:58 left ... Circleville - FT's taken by CHS going from 9 in the opening period, 12 in the half dropped to 0 FTs taken in the 4th period ... perimeter/3 point scoring 2/17 for the game ... Cramer unable to get help on the scoreboard - Cramer 21 points/Search 10 pts no 3rd dbl digit scorer for CHS ... the U won the final quarter 21-8 to take this one going away ... getting Coach Hoops win #250 on his coaching career while keeping the current U win streak alive at 4-0 on the '24 side of our pocket schedule ... Rebounding and stopping the dribble drive are huge parts to Unioto’s success going forward. They were better at stopping penetration last night, but the rebounding was an issue for sure.

Blake Hoops is averaging 15 a game in January, which is a big change from how the season started for him. Between him, Fitch, Schobelock and KB Perkins, they have 4 guys around or above double figures each night and that’s tough to defend.

daniC, usually KB Perkins IS very active on the boards, last night he was not a factor at either end of the floor ... I thought Blake Hoops played like he was "fully" in basketball mode ... he didn't try to force his way inside - he still went in strong but he seemed more under control ... his perimeter shot looked like a "basketball player" shooting the ball ... the U will be a handful if they get last night's 3 scorers getting it done each game and add KB Perkins chipping in almost 10ppg - the rebounding issue concerns me - last night Circleville didn't make the U pay on the boards, lots of offensive boards for CHS but not much to show on the scoreboard for it ...
