Scioto Valley Conference at the Half

Post by warningtrackpower »

With the SVC at the turn, SVC Sports Talk had a lot to talk about this week...

*Unioto vs. WF
*SE girls
*How many sectional champs in this year's league?
*How many current 1,000 pt scorers playing in the SVC?

My guesses in no order:

1st Team
Ashlee Lawhorn
Alexis Overly
Kelsie Robinson
Ella Skeens
Wheeler/T. Overly

2nd Team
Wheeler/T. Overly
Stonerock
Cox (5 steals a game!!)
Mathes
Wood

3rd Team
Unger
Nelson
Sams
Putnam/Fuchs/Ward/Blanton/Goebel
Pick 2 of those last 5. Not sure how Piketon puts up their 2nd, but I feel like they definitely should have 2 players represented.

I'd go with Alexis Overly and Kelsie Robinson as co-player of the year but I doubt the coaches see it that way.

I like the way you aligned the teams Dani. I'd go with Taylor Overly on first team for the last spot.

1st team
A Overly (poy)
Robinson
Skeens
T Overly
Lawhorn

2nd
Mathes
Wheeler
Nelson
Sams
Unger
3rd
Goebel
Ward
Wood
Edler
Stonerock

Don't know how 2nd team will end up Stonerock could easily be placed there for Sams or Unger.
COY probably co with Blue and Miller.

She must have went super nuts against Westfall and Piketon since she only averaged 15.5 PPG against Unioto

And did some more research and she did lol, 30, 32, 36, and 37 in the four games against Piketon and Westfall.

Yes she did. I figured she should be judged on what she did against the top half of the league that's why I put her average against Piketon, Westfall and Unioto.

I would have Stonerock on 1st team and move Sams to 2nd. I'd also switch Mathes and Blanton to 2nd and move Cox and Woods to 3rd. Can't argue with POY, both Overly and Skeens are deserving.

Congratulations to all the all-league athletes.

As I've stated before in other SVC sports I'm not a big fan of these awards.
Too much politics and numbers game come into play when making these selections.

So here goes my injustice rant not only for girls basketball but for all of the All-League voting for girls athletics over the past two seasons-
One outstanding athlete has once again been left off the SVC All-League list,
Westfalls Kelly Fuchs. (Sounds like fox)
Take your stats and justify what you want but here is the stats I would like an answer for:
Kelly has played large roles on three different SVC Championship teams in Three different sports, Volleyball and Softball her junior year and now Basketball in her Senior year.
I have no clue as to the number of SVC conference wins she has been a part of over her career or how many sectional and district titles she has helped win. She has been in a few Regional Championship games and scored the only run in Westfalls softball State Championship game.
I understand she doesn't rack up insane personal stats in these sports, but come on folks how does a player tally up this many wins and titles in a career and hardly ever get a mention when it comes to all-league awards?
Has the SVC ever had an athlete with this kind of winning resume, not just in one sport but in THREE?
Kelly may never get her SVC All-League just dues, but I for one recognize her and appreciate the impact she has on TEAM sports.

Also while up on this soap box,
Taylor Overly is clearly top 5 in the SVC, personally I think she is in the top 3.
If you was going to put a team together and use SVC players to do so she is an obvious starter and Kelly would be on that roster likewise (regardless of the sport).

Again congratulations to all
'Till my spring sports awards rant
X

Congratulations to all of the kids who made all-conference.

I don't see how Huntington finishes with a losing record and gets as many players on the top three teams as the top three teams in the conference and more than Piketon, which finished ahead of Huntington? Nothing against their kids, but it just looks weird.

Kelsie Robinson is the most improved player in the conference and I felt she deserved conference co-player of the year honors. Nothing against either Alexis Overly, who is a very fine all-around player, and Ella Skeens, who is one of the most exciting players to come up In the conference in recent memory. Westfall is perhaps the most balanced team in the conference, but Robinson was the X factor in Unioto's only SVC loss in the last two years. To me, that's worth something. I would have went with Alexis and Kelsie.

I agree with the sentiments on Taylor Overly. She is one of the top players in the conference.

As for Kelly Fuchs, she is one of those glue type kids on a successful team. She isn't the most flashy kid or have something (points, rebounds, assists or steals) that really stands out, but she is just a solid player who does a lot of little things to help make a team successful. I could make an argument for her to be on the third team.

Totally agree with the last two posts. Just like Vollyeball, great players from great teams left off while mediocre players from mediocre teams are recognized. Flawed system. Why are coaches afraid to just name the best 15 players regardless of who they play for?

Part of it is because the coach will hear from Little Jane's parents about why their daughter wasn't recognized on the team because she scores 13 points per game, compared to 10 points per game from some of the other players and Little Jane works hard. Of course those parents aren't looking at Little Jane being on a bad team and getting 15-20 shots per game, thus you should actually be scoring more than 13 points per game.

I would've limited Huntington to two kids on top three teams and had no one from PV (three wins, two vs. 0-22 Adena) on top three teams to create a couple of more spots for maybe a Fuchs or another kid from Unioto.

I found it odd that Huntington and Southeastern got a player on each 1st, 2nd and 3rd team. Unioto and Westfall received the same thing. Were those 4 teams equal talent wise? I find it hard to believe that two teams finishing 13-1 didn't have any more talent than a team finishing 10-4 and especially a team finishing 6-8. Did anyone else think this was strange?
