Fort Frye
Re: Fort Frye
Let me explain it to you better. Sorry I wasn’t more clear.
There was a Facebook post from a woman in Beverly that was shared on the internet. It talked about how girls should be coached by women. If this is such a great idea by people in the area, I am surprised she hired two men to be her assistant coaches.
On the topic of deserving, I believe Dan deserved to end his time at Fort Frye on his own time.
Jared has been a very good HS coach. His experience will help Borich a lot on the bench. She is fortunate to have him.
And Borich hasn’t coached HS basketball in 25 years. And just because a coach went from AAU to HS and won a state title, that doesn’t mean our new coach will do that. But we will see.

No idea, he informed us the morning of the formal interview that he was pulling his name from consideration.Sportsfan01 wrote: Sun May 18, 2025 9:23 pmDo you know if Dan has just decided to call it a career or if he’s still pursuing options and jist decided Caldwell wasn’t the fit?caldwellbasketball wrote: Sat May 17, 2025 4:47 pm Dan ultimately decided not to come to Caldwell. As our district director I had to submit his career accomplishments with him being our D6 COY nomination for the state coaches association, it is eye popping to say the least.
As a boys head coach he went 433-172 in 27 seasons. 12 sectional titles, 3 district titles, a regional title and appearance in the final 4. He also won 17 PVC titles and 6 OVAC titles. That's a hall of fame career in itself.
As the girls head coach he had a record of 327-87 in 15 seasons with 9 district titles and 3 regional titles appearing in the final 4 three times. They also won 11 PVC/TSL titles and appeared in the OVAC title game 8 times. He has won the both the prestigious Arnzen award and Paul Walker award from the OHSBCA along with 25 different coach of the year awards ranging from league, district and state level. His overall record at Fort Frye as a head coach is 760-259 and incredible winning percentage of .750. He literally has won 3 of every 4 games he's coached over nearly 40 years. Hats off to a great career, hate that he didn't get an opportunity to go out on his own terms.
Re: Fort Frye
I'm still not sure what people expected the school to do IF the union contract stipulates that they have to hire a qualified teacher if they apply. So this seems to be a lot to do about nothing unless I missed something. As far as the staff, what little I have found I don't see where Kasun ever coached high school ball but Cathy was an assistant at Warren for a period of time so she does have some HS experience if that is true. I assume this is the same Kasun that does radio sometimes and he seems to know what he is doing so they should be fine.
As far as the players, it would be hard to tell them not to go to Waterford for their sake but I am with Trampoline and hope they don't for our sake. In all honesty, I think the kids will play and the team will be good again. Like I said earlier, I think their bigger issue is having Hiland to contend with now which last year's team did not have to deal with. Hiland will be down but down for them is still pretty good.

I think Kasun coached at Meigs or Fed Hock for a period of time.
I’d doubt kids would transfer to Waterford. That’s a lot of action.

Re: Fort Frye
Good call on Kasun. It was not Fed Hock but he was at Meigs. And I agree that the kids would not go to Waterford, probably due to the crap they would get if they decided to do something like that. But I really don't see them going anywhere to be honest. I think they stay and they play.

Kids generally don’t leave, the talent level is supposed to be high so i’m sure they’ll be good. The difference will be seen in the tight games against really good teams like Hiland and Waterford, that’s where having an experienced coach matters. I know nothing of the assistant coach, i’ve been out of the area a few years now, I know the Hesson guy he had kids at Caldwell around my kids age, nice guy but not much of a coach.

It doesn’t have to do with union contract. It is the ORC that requires and qualified teacher to be given the opportunity. That is what the superintendent and board said at their last meeting.dboy wrote: Thu May 22, 2025 9:38 am I'm still not sure what people expected the school to do IF the union contract stipulates that they have to hire a qualified teacher if they apply. Thanks for the clarification Sportsfan. I understood it was a union thing so that is my mistake. I guess the same applies if the board had no choice but it does change the narrative a bit. I guess either way it is done now so hopefully the kids can move on and have a good summer which should be in full swing now. I know they will be a tough matchup for anybody around here and hopefully they put together a tough schedule to prepare them for a good tourney run. And hopefully the adults support the program which I am sure they will once things settle down a bit. Best of luck.Sportsfan01 wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 8:37 amIt doesn’t have to do with union contract. It is the ORC that requires and qualified teacher to be given the opportunity. Agreed. I think the schools hands were tied on this. To me it’s a silly law, but when it was written im not sure it this scenario was thought out.dboy wrote: Tue May 27, 2025 8:56 amThanks for the clarification Sportsfan. It is and isn't true. If a current coach is not a teacher they can be brought back without opening it up to a teacher. If current coach is let go teachers get dibs and have to be hired over outside coach of they want it.

Re: Fort Frye
Heard that teams are dropping Fort Frye from there schedule due to this coaching situation. Most programs are for Dan and have decided not to play FF next year for girls basketball. Shame on you punishing the girls that had no say In the decision. Looks like Fort will have to travel a lot. They need more games! This is ridiculous

I spoke with the AD and union local dropped FF. There were 2 other teams that dropped FF, but he wouldn't tell me who. He said that as he's calling and email other teams to try and fill out the schedule, but they are all telling him they won't play us due to the coaching situation. I was told that the girls will definitely have to travel for games. It just sucks bc the girls had nothing in the schools decision, yet they are the ones that will suffer bc of it.

The union local coach, Scooter Tolzda, was at Fort Fryes last board meeting and spoke in support of Dan and said Union Local wouldn’t play them due to their decision and that other OVAC schools would probably do the same.SportsGuy25 wrote: Thu May 29, 2025 5:19 pm I spoke with the AD and union local dropped FF. FF girls have entered the warren summer league. First 2 games of the summer are tonight. They will play belpre and warren. Fort will be missing 2 starters, Lang, and Huffman are both on vacation. With no practices, well see how this group does. Will be interesting to see how the new coaches, coach.
Re: Fort Frye
You'll have to let us know how the games go, lot of question marks for the TSL this coming season.SportsGuy25 wrote: Mon Jun 02, 2025 3:39 pm FF girls have entered the warren summer league. Re: Fort Frye
I am going to assume them playing two games without any practices is true, but if I was a head coach taking over a program, I’d want to make sure I had a few practices with my team before playing outside competition.
Seems odd to me. Like how will they know what to run on baseline plays? Press break? A basic offense?

Re: Fort Frye
FF played really well last night. They lost to warren by 1 on a last second buzzer beater. Then they turned around and beat belpre by 4. FF was missing 2 starters, Aubrie Lang and ava Hoffman both were on vacation. The girls coached themselves. The 3 new coaches did not want to use a contact day so they were behind the bench watching. Girls rotated in and out every 2-3 minutes. There was 5 freshman that rotated in. In my eyes, missing 2 starters, playing 5 freshman, and not having a coach actually coaching you, the girls played extremely well. They will play again Friday at ohio northern university in a shootout. All in all, I'd say FF basketball is gonna be pretty good again next season.

Fort will play Ottawa Glandorf, Celina, and Arcadia tomorrow at ohio northern shootout. Good teams that we would normally never face.
