When it all came together with the best player of the decade in the SE, Burdette, in her 2014 senior year with her supporting cast, they took the state title. Eastern and Waterford are in the same league and as I recall, Waterford won the league championship every year of the decade except 2014. I agree that even though Waterford didn't win the state in 2015, that was their best team with freshmen Ball and Kern joined the team along with Jrs. Porter and Drayer, along with a valuable Sr. class. In 2016 with the underclasswomen being a year more mature they were able to win the state. I think both the 2015 and 2016 teams would have topped Eastern's 2014 state champ team.

Last incomplete season took away Fort Frye's best opportunity to win state. They were playing very well together and were about to play in the state semis when the plug was pulled. Their mantra should be "we would've won state in 2020"!

That’s the worst part for everyone, we will never know. If we would have known then what we know now, they could have played the games with parents only because Covid isn’t as bad when only parents are in the gym.

They finished 25-3 overall and as the runner-up in Division I. Most of the same team went 26-1 in '90-'91, that season ended with a state semi-final loss to Canfield.

They lost to Penn Hills (Pittsburgh) in the Pickerington Holiday Tournament and to Urbana in the regular season while defeating Mother of Mercy (Cincinnati), Bishop Guilfoyle (Altoona, PA), and Magnicat out of Rocky River. All were power house programs.

In the tournament, they had to go through three UNDEFEATED teams after the District - knocking off Youngstown Boardman (56-39) and Wooster (55-42) in the regional and then beating undefeated Vandalia Butler (60-48) in the state semifinal before falling to Pickerington in the state title game.

Most people are familiar with Katie Smith. She was named Ms. Basketball and also the Gatorade National Player of the Year; and played in the Kodak All-American game (at the time the girls version of the McDonalds All-American game).

But in addition, the team featured 1,000 point scorers Melissa Cooper, Tez Kraft, and Tami Hampshire.

Tez Kraft had a great career at UMass (where she scored 1,000 and was an All-A10 performer), Cooper played at Ohio U. Hampshire had a good career at Ohio Wesleyan. Those three were all sophomores in '91-'92.
Have to admire what Katie Smith did after college. Pro championships, scoring and a string of Gold Metals. One of the most decorated girl basketball players in the world.

Peebles 1998 team that played Chagrin Falls in the state final game was awesome. In that state final game ,Junior Amber Ison picked up her 3 personal foul in the 1st quarter essentially taking her out of a game that the lady Indians eventually lost.
Leading up to that game the lady Indians beat 5 state ranked teams in the tourney leading up to that final game. Four of those girls played college athletics. Amber turned down a full ride to Xavier, Jamie Brown went to West Point and competed athleticly,Paula Scott played at Florida International,Jessica Fraley played but not sure where.Jessica Frailey Johnsons Daughter is a freshman sensation at Peebles now.

Yea, I remember them being really impressive and read on here from 91-94 they were clearly the best in this part of the state. Never did hear how many state titles they won though.
They won zero D1 state titles...the team’s with Katie were not beatable by any team of the SE district...ever
Dat Eastern team dat won da state woulda beat dem Chieftains.

Realize it's a team thread, but seems like a lotta individual talk, an it's tough to have any conversation about "best" and "all time" and "Ohio girls basketball" and not have a mention of Marlene Stollings.. greatest scorer in Ohio history, regardless of gender.. crazy stats..

Marline was a good player. Watched her a few times in high school.

Marlene was a sensational player in a D4 league that wasn’t very challenging. She could score snd shoot with anyone. Her overall game wasn’t as polished at Smith’s.

Top all-time players she has to be mentioned.
