Vinton County 44 Napoleon 76 D2 State Final final ...

Vinton County 44
Napoleon 76 a final

... I know it's difficult for BOTH TEAMs but playing on back to back days FOR a State Championship has got to be one of the most difficult things to do in high school sport - especially if your bench isn't long ... trying to scout/come up with a game plan - difficult at best ... both teams entered the championship battle with 25-1 records ... for Coach Bentley and his Lady Vikings history was already in the books- record setting regular season, sectional title, district title, regional title THEN winning the final 4 semi ? one for the ages ... to play for a D2 state title - icing on the cake ... VC fans, fans of SEO hoops boys or girls are so proud of this group who got initiated into the world of the post season, life beyond SEO in tournament play (although Coach B & his staff had the Lady Viks playing up vs quality teams and only suffering 1 setback in the regular season) ... they learned that air at the Show is in fact rarified air ...

... to be IN this one vs a quality opponent as Napoleon (whose only loss was to Mount Notre Dame who was playing for the State championship in D1) the Vikings would need to be hitting on all cylinders - defensively getting out on perimeter shooters, defensively being able to stop the inside shots at the rim, offensively having all of it's weapons working for 32 minutes ... no question about the heart of a champion in the Lady Vikings, the question was did they have anything left in the tank to battle a bench deep Wildcats team ... the opening quarter didn't start as planned as the Wildcats jumped out early to a 10-0 lead getting a fg each from Taylor Strock (5 pts) and Caely Ressler ... most of the damage in the qtr was done from the foul line as the 'Cats went 8/11 from the line ... the Vikings struggled as they turned the ball over 6 times in the opening period while going 0/5 from beyond the arc ... VC was held scoreless until the 3:04 mark when Morgan Bentley got a putback bucket ... turnaround is fair play as the Lady Vikes went on an 8-0 run of their own to get back into the game - Bentley 4 points, Cameron Zinn 2 and pair of FTs from senior Myriah Davis ... Vinton County 8 Napoleon 12 after one ... the first qtr. saw NHS getting inside, getting the FT line (8/11) ... in the 2nd period the Wildcats opened up the playbook when VC tried to apply more pressure ... good ball movement, VC helping in the paint defensively opened the perimeter up for the Napoleon outside threats - Sophie Chipps (5pts), Taylor Strock(4 pts), Kalli Helberg(6 pts) each dropped a trey in the quarter as NHS went 3/6 from downtown in the qtr. ... the Wildcats continued the parade to the line going 4/7 ... for VC Bentley/Zinn were the scoring in the 2nd, all from inside the paint (Bentley 6pt/Zinn 6 pts) ... the Vikings increased pressure on D turned the Wildcats over 6 times in the period with 2 transition buckets to show for it ... but the difference in the quarter was the Vikings trading 2 pointers for 3 pointers while putting the Cats on the line ... Napoleon 31 Vinton County 20 at the half ... teams don't get to the state finals without being good, BOTH VC and NHS are good ... playing IN a game like this the players have a feeling when they have it that game or it's just not our day today ... the 3rd quarter was the deciding quarter that put the Vikes out of the game- gave NHS the separation needed to begin doing whatever they wanted on the court ... the Wildcats opened the 3rd with a 11-2 run that pushed the NHS lead to 20 points ... at 4:58 on the clock Napoleon jumped to a 42-22 advantage on the scoreboard ... for VC they final got a 3 ball to drop as Morgan Bentley picked up 7 pts with a triple, Myriah Davis added a deuce and Tegan Bartoe 2/2 from the line ... as a team VC went 2/8 from the FT line in the 3rd ... the best player on the court - Taylor Strock singlehandedly opened up the NHS lead and opened the door to the state 'ship by hitting 2 three's among her 12 point qtr. ... teammates Caely Ressler 6 pts/Kalli Helberg with 3 pts/ and Emma Pedroza 2 ... Napoleon 56 Vinton County 31 end of 3 ... the 4th period was 8 minutes of playing out the inevitable - the end of the storybook season for the Vikings ... VC got 5 more points from sr. Morgan Bentley, a 3 ball from Lydia Nichols off the bench, 5 pts from jr. Cameron Zinn who had an outstanding game for the Vikings -at both ends of the floor CZ showed what we can expect more of from the VC squad in 2021-22 ... Napoleon went 12/16 from the charity stripe in the final qtr. ... Helberg 4 pts/Pedroza 2/Strock 2/ Ressler 8/Grace Hopkins 3 off the bench/Claire Durham 1 ... Napoleon 76 Vinton County 44 a final
