I remember this past summer when I took over the boy's program, during one of our first open gyms the girls challenged the boys and played extremely well, never backing down and playing with passion. I told them they would put a championship banner on the gym wall if they played the game like that. Knowing that they have an outstanding head coach and staff, I figured it could probably happen sooner rather than later. I'm very happy for their success and the opportunity to make lifetime memories together. It's so awesome to see the program blossom into greatness! Go Lady Trojans! Win it all..

In fact it had been nearly 40 years since a district championship. Now Coaches Amy and Mike Hughes have taken this program to a brand new level, so much so that playing in the state tournament seemed a thousand miles away in just the recent past. We have a group of girls that have dedicated themselves to hard work, and they are now reaping the rewards of that hard work.

It will seem almost surreal to see our Lady Trojans take the court at 8:00 PM on Thursday in front of thousands of fans, far different that the scant following when times were tough. I'm quite sure that our Lady Trojans will be ready to play their best, and make all Trojan fans and alumni very proud.

GO LADY TROJANS!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!
Mike Hughes is a great coach. Assume his daughter took after him.
He is.And the apple didn't fall far from the tree with Amy.Wishing Portsmouth all the best Thursday.
Amy was a great player as well; went to UConn initially but then transferred to Xavier. Probably #2 all-time girls player at Burg just behind Cremeans.

The Fairland boys made the Final 4 in 1961 and 2017, and both teams lost in the semifinals. My point above is that Portsmouth, Eastern Meigs, and Oak Hill are the only 3 SE schools that have made the Final 4 in both boys and girls and have won the state in either.
My dad was most valuable player on the 1961 team I have 8mm game film

We have been blessed as Trojan fans to see quite a few of our boys and girls basketball teams play in the Final 4. For me, today will be the 7th basketball Final 4 that I have watched in person with a Portsmouth team playing. 1978, 1980, 1988, 1990, 2011, 2012 (all boys), and now 2024 with the Lady Trojans. In 5 of the previous 6 trips I've seen the Trojans advance to the state championship game, winning it all twice (1978 and 1988). The only semifinal loss was in the 2011 D3 state semifinal to Cleveland Central Catholic.

In fact, if you count all the Final 4's in basketball, baseball, and football, Portsmouth HS has produced a total of 19 Final 4 teams. The boys basketball team has 11 official Final 4's, but the total number of state appearances is 15 (the state tourney in the early days was in the Elite 8 or Sweet 16 format).

Football: 1984, 2000
Baseball: 1932, 1951, 1952, 1980, 1981
Basketball: (boys) 1927, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1961, 1978, 1980, 1988, 1990, 2011, 2012, 2024(girls)
Boys basketball not Final 4 but state appearances: 1925, 1926, 1939, 1941

GO LADY TROJANS!! YOU HAVE MADE ANOTHER GREAT CHAPTER OF PORTSMOUTH HS HISTORY!! YOU CAN DO THIS!!

Is this game possibly being streamed by NFHS Network or Spectrum News 1?

Proud Pirate 63: I just looked it up and Spectrum is supposed to televise all the girls semifinal and final games on Spectrum News 1 or Channel 314.

Are you sure about Spectrum televising all Semifinal girls games? I just checked my spectrum channel and I'm not seeing any games tonight at 8:00 or tomorrow at 11:00AM. I do see all the girls final games Saturday. I sure would like to watch the semis.

Add D2 Vinton County to that list as a state runner up in 2020/2021. They beat Laurel in the state semi final and lost to Napoleon in the championship game.
