If you're good at soccer your good at soccer? The better team wins on turf or grass. Sportsmanship has nothing to do with it. And I'm pretty sure the high school field isn't in the best shape so everybody should be happy it's on a much nicer field. If I had to guess the parents and fans are the only ones who are as concerned, the players are probably more worried about the game at hand.mhs95_06 wrote:Can the home team arbitrarily change the site?soccerfix wrote:Waverly finds out this am that the game is at Marietta College. Waverly played their last game against Athens on turf and did fine. Marietta plays very well at Devola... I'm very surprised they would want the game to be at Don Drumm. Although I know their coach will probably have some very good memories of that stadium from his playing days. If anything, although Marietta isn't driving 2 1/2 hours to get to the game like Waverly is, this is really like playing at a neutral field.

Waverly looked to be offsides on the goal so if he was the goal shouldn't stand so the goal was tainted.smurray wrote:what is a tainted goal?

Looks as though Marrieta will advance and good luck to them!!
Great Season for the Tigers!
Looks as though the Tigers were behind the 8ball with this game
1. Top player hurt
2 Very good forward not playing due to choices right at tourney time.
3. 2 1/2 hour drive for a Sectional Game dont care what anyone says that takes something out of you and with the league Waverly is placed in it will be hard for them to garner a top seed no matter the record. Southeast district really needs to do something about travel times. I can understand for a district or a regional but sectional needs to be more confined area.
Will be nice to see what this coaching staff can do in year 2, with a good senior class and a very exciting freshman class.

Heard a few rumors as to why the venue changed:
1. Too many people watching thru the fence in Devola and "district officials" requested venue change
2. Complaints about the condition of the Devola soccer field
3. If it rained, the field turf would be better to play on

Also heard somebody mention that they changed to Don Drum because of the amount of tournament games that are played on turf. Kind of keeps a similar playing field through the entire tournament. Either way not really relevant to the games outcome. Marietta played well and I hope they continue to do so. They put a lot of shots up and the goal against them was questionable. Could have easily been 7 or 8 to 0. Marietta has a lot of talent and potential to won the district. Kind of a shame whoever wins the district usually has to go play some private school though. But that's another conversation.
Re: #5 Waverly @ #1 Marietta
The first game on Saturday Hillsboro girls played Marietta. Hillsboro had to travel over 3 to get there. This too was a sectional game. That's half way across the state of Ohio.

No one said the system was perfect, but it is what it is.
I can remember when Marietta was still a Division 1 school in the early 2000's and were forced to play in the northeast district in the tournament, having to travel 3+ hours on a Tuesday for an opening round tournament game up around Hudson, then if they would win, travel 3+ hours again on Thursday night to the Hudson area to play again, and then if they would happen to win a second round game, travel 3+ hours on Saturday to the area to play again.... you get the idea. Everyone has "been there, done that" at some point in time.

It sucks but there isn't a lot to do to change it unless you change the districts because in order to play at the higher seed somebody usually has to make a lengthy drive. Even the neutral site doesn't fix the problem. Marietta has to drive over two hours to play in Lucasville and it seems to be a yearly thing that they make it there. There was potential for a Warren vs Marietta game in Lucasville, so two schools driving 2+ hours when they are about 20 minutes away from each other. Marietta had to play Athens there on year, when they are about 45 min apart yet both had to make rather lengthy drives. But there isn't much to do to fix it.
