Coach Boll

Post by orange73 »

I belive that the last game of the season vs Eastern was Coach Boll's 350th soccer victory. He has been the only soccer coach at Wheelersburg, 25 years.

Paul is a great coach but that would be averaging 14 wins a season. The OHSAA only allows a 16 game schedule. I know that tournament games count but seems like a pretty high winning percentage. I think Drrabbit would know.

Soccerfix... the high school seasons used to be 20 games in a season, plus the postseason in those years. (However, I can't remember when that changed... sometime in the 1990's I believe).

Congrats to Coach Boll on 25 years!!!

If that's the case, I'm surprised that it took that long. Congrats Coach Boll.

It changed from an 18 game season to 16 games in 1988 and has been that way till now.
Wheelersburg was 7-6-1 in 1986 and 15-4-2 during their second season in 1987.

Looking at last years record book and adding this season Wheelersburg is 352-74-39.
Coach Boll is the only coach they have had so the average is 14.08-2.96-1.56.

Congrats Coach

Neuron is right, it was 18 games in the early years but it changed in 1988.
1986 7-6-1
1987 15-4-2
1988 13-6-1
1989 13-3-2
1990 9-5-5
1991 15-1
1992 11-6-1
1993 16-3-1
1994 21-1
1995 15-1-3
1996 17-1
1997 17-2-1
1998 17-3
1999 17-1-2
2000 17-2-1
2001 15-4
2002 12-3-2
2003 13-3-1
2004 15-2-1
2005 11-5-2
2006 14-3
2007 14-3-1
2008 13-4-2
2009 13-5-1
2010 13-2-3 (with another game to be played)

Minus two wins which were shootout wins in tournament and you come up with 351 wins total. (Shootouts wins and losses count as ties for purposes of coaching records.)

That's a lot of soccer. Most coaches don't stick with it that long.

Congrats Coach Boll!

i agree burg has had some nice wins in reg season and post season. but burg has also scheduled some worthless stat-padding games that no other coach would waste their time with. i.e. - state record : burg scores 28 goals vs. west union in 1999. Burg regularly schedules inferior opponents for wins and stats. this is a sad truth because burg usually has the athletes and firepower to take on better opponents.

I don't think anyone can dispute that game was a farce, but in that case it was a tournament game so Coach Boll had nothing to do with scheduling. I do agree that a tougher non-conference schedule would be good for them, though.

Who would you schedule? Trust me, it's not for lack of trying. Bigger and tougher schools in this sport don't waste their time on teams from our area. It's a sad truth. I agree that Burg would be all the better by playing a tougher non-conference schedule, but in scheduling you are competeing to get those "better" teams just like every other team in the state.

i have to agree. who is left to play. you could cross the river but they are not interested. with games through the week who can travel north of chillicothe. no one. another thing who else plays a tougher schedule? it seems to me most of the games are scheduled amongst ourselves. "playing a tougher schedule is easier said than done".

1. There are several tougher teams left in our area that would be challenging matches for Wheelersburg. Athens, Alexander, Jackson, and Chillicothe Unioto all have solid programs. A couple of them were a bit down this past year but I expect them to be as strong as ever in the next year or two. Wheelersburg has had a lot of success. I'd think at least one of those teams would want to add 'Burg to their schedule. Those teams aren't the quality of a CVCA, Worthington Christian, or Berlin Hiland but they are on a totally different level than Chesapeake, South Point, St. Joe, etc..
'Burg used to scrimmage Alexander and Athens every year and Jackson was on their schedule at one point.

2. If travel is a concern, play on a Saturday. The state is moving the 2011 Soccer season start date up to Saturday, August 20th instead of Monday the 22nd. So there's an extra Saturday to get a game in.

3. I believe both Minford and South Webster have tougher non-conference games than Wheelersburg.
*Minford plays Albany Alexander and Jackson each year.
*South Webster plays Athens, Zane Trace, and Alexander. Jackson was on their schedule until this season. Jackson was unable to play them this year due to scheduling.
*Wheelersburg does play Zane Trace (which is a high quality opponent). However, they could do more to strengthen their schedule. Adding any of the teams listed above would improve Wheelersburg's schedule.

Wow, that's pretty impressive. I know his assistant Don lewis had a POWERHOUSE at New Boston in the late 80's and early 90's. Very good coaching staff at Burg. When I played I always enjoyed watching Boll coach from the bleachers w/ his clipboard..LOL
