Best Boys Soccer Goalie in the SOC??

Post by sportsman2016 »

What do y’all think? Or who are some of the best you’ve seen? Jared Opperman at West would be my pick. Kid in the two games I watched had 30+ saves both games

Tommy Garman is a great goalie for western. Multiple 30 plus saves a game and is keeping western competitive in their first year of competition. Punts the ball 60 yards after saves.

Green from Burg has made himself a good goalie. Does a lot of things well.

Yet his coach has him credited with 53 saves after 11 games. I would agree with the coach's stats. Just because a keeper touches the ball it is not a save.

I was just looking at the OHSAA state record book for most saves in a game (for boys). If you notice, most of these listed are from quite a while ago. I would venture to guess that this is because of the way the stats were kept in the past and coaches have realized they were keeping the saves stats wrong. Very few teams would ever get 30 actual shots on goal, much less 30 that were able to be saved.

On a side note, I looked up the WU vs LC game mentioned below with 44 saves. There is a note that the game was shortened 20 minutes. 44 saves in 60 minutes would be a match Scott Sterling would be proud of!!

54 - Tony Kremer, Monroe vs. Centerville (1996)
45 - Brett Ford, Vienna Mathews vs. Crestview (08/26/2006)
45 - Alex Spitler, Sycamore Mohawk vs. Van Buren (10/09/2000)
44 - Clayton Madden, West Union vs. Lynchburg Clay (09/02/2015)
42 - Jerry Haustetter, Cincinnati Glen Este vs. Cincinnati Sycamore (1979)
40 - Scott Cameron, Mount Vernon vs. Big Walnut (09/28/2001)
40 - Brett Ford, Vienna Mathews vs. Warren Champion (10/21/2004)
40 - Matt Koopman, Pleasant Hill Newton (09/09/2003)
40 - Jerry Haustetter, Cincinnati Glen Este vs.Cincinnati Western Hills (1978)
38 - Bryce Kramer, West Union vs. Portsmouth West (09/28/2009)
38 - Ryan Paul, Elmore Woodmore vs. Oak Harbor (08/23/2010)
38 - Brad Eby, Woodsfield Monroe Central vs. Steubenville (09/13/2005)
38 - Chris Clark, Zanesville Maysville vs. Dresden Tri-Valley (1994)
37 - Brett Ford, Vienna Mathews vs. Bristolville Bristol (09/29/2004)
36 - Tanner Masters, Hebron Lakewood vs. Licking Heights (09/07/2017)
36 - Joe Bell, Reading vs. Norwood (09/25/2003)
36 - Wes Auld, Convoy Crestview vs. Ada (10/17/2000)
36 - Tim Oberschlake, Cincinnati Glen Este vs. Milford (1980)
35 - Wes Auld, Convoy Crestview vs. Lima Bath (10/19/1999)

Yet, on MaxPreps his coach has him at 129 saves in 4 games. That’s an average of 32 saves a game. I have been beyond impressed with the young man. He has a horrendous defense in front of him that leaves him on an island for 80minutes

I have no doubt he is a fine young keeper, but 32 saves a game is not realistic.

I was on the losing end of that West Union keeper's 38 saves, and I can tell you that is likely an accurate number. We controlled the ball very well and were able to get plenty of shots off from distance, but...well, you know. None of them were good shots, but they were on target. That was the game plan and we stuck to it. :D

A save is awarded to a goalkeeper only if a shot otherwise would
have gone into the goal. A goalkeeper can be credited with a save without
catching the ball. If the goalkeeper blocks the ball or punches it wide or
over the goal, that goalkeeper can be credited with a save, provided the
ball would have otherwise gone into the goal. To receive a save, the play
must be a shot on goal.

A goalkeeper who intercepts a cross is not credited with a save.
Exception: A cross that the goalkeeper stops that otherwise would have
entered the goal is considered a shot, and the goalkeeper is credited with a save.
